  • Martin Scorsese's New Film, Departed is Amazing

Just saw this film last night, and I have to say, I don't know the last time I saw a film like that. It was amazing. Riveting action, great script, acting, plot, etc. It was violent, but guess what, so is reality.

It will see lots of Oscar action next year.

Anyway, I highly recommend it, great movie.

P.S. Graphic violence and drug use, so you'll want to leave the kids at home.

I saw the Departed Friday night, and it was good but to me it wasn't great. I felt the beginning dragged a bit, but ended great. I think it also ran a little too long as most movies tend to do now. If it was shortened by about 30 minutes It would have worked better for me. And that could easily been done by cutting half of the F bombs out, mind you I curse a lot myself, but this movie used it excessivly.

An as always this movie makes South Boston look far worse than it is. Though I didn't grow up in Southie I have many ties to it now.

How great was marky mark? And Alec Baldwin was perfect. I wish the ending was different, but it was a great ride.

Ah, finally a movie worth seeing. Thanks for the brief review Max and D.M. The movies seem lackluster lately, and the cast in this one really enticed me to go see this one. I'll go check it out tonight.

Re: Martin Scorsese's New Film, Departed is Amazing

I saw The Departed yesterday afternoon. One of Scorsese's best . . . even though the ending left me a little flat and there was one loose end that just didn't make sense.

          Spoiler
Killing DiCaprio's character and two other supporting characters was way too tidy (figuratively, not literally). Damon's character needed to get his comeuppance. And, since Damon's girlfriend had the goods on him, why didn't she turn him in?

That said, the pacing of the movie was non-stop without being tiresome and the dialogue absolutely crackled--the exchanges between Martin Sheen, Mark Wahlberg and Alec Baldwin will be quoted for years (albeit not in mixed company). Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio as two different tormented souls have never been better and Jack Nicholson--well, Jack was Jack at his scenery-chewing best as the mob boss Frank Costello.

As Max said, The Departed is old school Scorsese, so the violence is intense and pervasive and the language is profane. I was stunned to see two parents sitting in front of us at the theater with their two small children.

Highly recommended (the movie, not bringing your kids). Go see it.

I want to see this one, I love Jack Nicholoson and Martin Scorsese.

Hopefully, the Academy will give Martin some well derserved respect this year.

I was going to see this last night with My boyfriend but decided to avoid the crowds. I will definitely try and see it this Wednesday though and I am looking forward to it. I haven't been excited about seeing a movie in a while.

Re: Martin Scorsese's New Film, Departed is Amazing

I went to the last showing at our theater, and they have the new DLP system(digital from Texas Instruments) that gives such great picture quality that made some scenes look so defined and clear.
Jack Nicholson was "Jack" in this one and I loved every minute of it. I will say if you have a weak stomach for violence you may want to think it over.

Dicaprio, Damon, Baldwin, Wahlberg, and Sheen all put in some great work on this. I would love to see Ray Winstone(Mr. French) get some recognition for a very convincing role that he showed in this film.
I noticed Brad Pitt co-produced this film. Interesting.
Powerful movie.I enjoyed most of the movie until the end, which there were many gasps in the audience.

I saw it on Saturday nite. Great to see Jack back. I went home and spent the rest of the night watching Goodfellas and Casino.

I agree with what most everyone is saying. Fantastic acting, some really funny parts and some genuine shocking moments.

I also agree with people who don't like the ending. What a joke. After sitting there for 2 and half hours we get that? Very dissapointing, the rest of the movie took a long time to move through but the end just sorta splatters all over to finish it up, a big big let down.

Even with the lackluster finish where a good majority of the violence is anyway, I still enjoyed everything else.

I heard that this was a japanese re-make of infernal affairs, and that the original was full of more suspense.

^^ I heard that too. But I don't know how well know it is that Jack's character, Frank Costello, is based off of Whitey Bulger (one of the FBI's most wanted mobsters from Boston)

I agree that it took a while to get started, but WOW! What a satisfying ending!

Two Thumbs up, but don't watch on a full stomach (you might sleep through the first hour... )

I agree the ending where the bomb went off before they could cut the correct wire, was really disappointing!!

I didn't think the beginning was too slow, maybe I should raise my expectations. I think it's tricky because there is so much going on, you need to have the set-up. I can't wait to own this movie and hear the commentary.

I agree, there are more quotable moments here than in Full Metal Jacket. I hope Oscar is generous to this movie.

As for the end, I didn't care for it either, since I was rooting for things to go a different way, but I guess in the real world, sometimes everyone loses, so why can't movies be like that too?
