Disney banks on $100m film of Narnia

Studio that passed on LOTR trilogy spends $100-million on C.S. Lewis classic

Is the magical world of Disney any match for the power of a child's imagination?

The Disney studio is spending $100 million on C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in hopes that the answer is a resounding yes.

"This is, without question, one of the most ambitious projects we have ever been a part of," Dick Cook, Disney studio chairman, told USA Today in an interview. "Our desire is to raise our level of storytelling and filmmaking."
The movie, produced by Walden Media, is being distributed and co-financed by Walt Disney Studios. It has a reported $100-million budget, although some estimates put the cost as high as $150 million.
The trailer shows the story's four young siblings -- adventurous Lucy, sly Edmund, clever Susan and practical Peter -- after their passage to Narnia by means of a hidden passage in an old wardrobe. Suddenly, the screen fills with snarling wolves and other digitally rendered beasts that are decidedly non-cuddly.
