  • The Disney Studios Burbank

I've just taken a 'virtual' tour around the Disney studios and I'm surprised to say I'm disgusted at one man's lack of taste.

    1. The Team Disney center can easily be described as Mike's personal shrine. It's not a welcoming building and when you put the shapes used together, they sit on that line between being dull but likable and zany and interesting. (BTW I hate Micheal Graves, the shapes and colors used in his work are just... Wrong. Wake up and smell the Frank Ghery roses...)

    2. The Frank G. Wells center is a box with a horrid, cliched facade. If I had a building like that post-humorously dedicated to me, I'd be rolling in my grave.

    3. The gate to the entrance of the lot doesn't even fit. Palm Trees? Why didn't they take influence from the Art-Deco brick entrance near Stage 2?

    4. (Non Eisner) The Roy O. Disney building is a concrete bunker. They really should re-clad it in something more artistic.

    5. The ABC center is just way too boring (It's too extreme in simplicity) and the wrong colors were chosen, especially it being next to the Mohawk.

The only building I can say I like from the Eisner batch is the Feature Animation building. It is amazing with it's use of color and shapes, and stands out well with the Mohawk and sorcerers hat. It's even influenced my little doodles. I guess it's the art-deco look of the original buildings that shines through in the design.

The only thing that ruins the building for me is the service station and the poorly laid out entrance plaza... It would be so much better with the cars pared under-ground and the space made free for a open plaza with plants and a cafe...

There are more, but I'm tired. I guess I needed to rant on Architecture again... (My Favorite )Any Comments?

(P.S. Did they really let out the animation for office space... because if they did that's just sad. Really sad.)

You might be suprised how many people who work on the lot would agree with your opinions. But as long as the original 1940's buildings are still there I'm content.
What if the Hokey-Pokey really is what it's all about?

Did they permit you to take pictures? I'd love to see some posted on here :-)

      Thanks!

See my thread in All Entertainment regarding the screening of "Dream On Silly Dreamer"... then do whatever you can to see the film. Yes. Really sad.
"Yesterday, a man walked up to me and said, 'Isn't it a shame that Walt Disney couldn't be here to see this?' and I said, "He did see this, that's why it's here."

I'd like to take a moment to define 'virtual'. I never went, I just browsed through pages 16 - 36 (link to page 16 bellow) of this article. I would honestly give my left arm to go if I could. Same goes to being able to fly into LA from Sydney to have seen the Dreamer presentation.
