SEATTLE (Reuters) - The video game arm of Walt Disney Co. (NYSE
IS - news) has acquired the rights to the troubled video game franchise "Turok" and will develop the game at its new Vancouver studio, the company said on Friday.
Buena Vista Games also said that games based on the comic book character will be developed by Propaganda Games, the Canadian studio that Buena Vista launched last month with a mission to develop non-Disney-branded games for older audiences.
The last game in the "Turok" franchise, 2002's "Turok: Evolution," was a disastrous flop for publisher Acclaim Entertainment Inc. Acclaim had high hopes that the game would reverse its flagging fortunes and spent accordingly to promote the launch.
But plagued by middling reviews and heavy competition, "Turok" fell far short of expectations, leading the company to increase its reserves dramatically to account for price discounts and returned games. Copies of the game still occasionally surface as giveaways with new consoles.
Acclaim eventually went out of business, and "Turok" sat undeveloped until now.
Graham Hopper, general manager of Buena Vista Games, said in an interview that Turok was "a property that has proven itself to generations of consumers over the years."
"It's a rich story line that can be developed," Hopper said.
