"Hercules" does the heavy lifting on NBC, and country music offers the 40th annual salute to its best. Britney Spears and her hubby get a new series on UPN, and the Muppets take a fresh look at Oz on ABC. CBS airs the daytime Emmys, and Fox shows how not to become an American Idol. Spike ranks the top racecar drivers, and Animal Planet showcases those "Star Wars" creatures. Sela Ward joins the cast of "House." And with his series ending, Ray Romano reminds viewers why everybody loves Raymond.
THE Muppets' wizard of oz
Friday at 8 p.m. on ABC
Singer Ashanti joins forces with the Muppets for a contemporary interpretation of the familiar story of a girl who yearns to soar somewhere over the rainbow. In 2005, Dorothy lives in a Kansas trailer park but dreams of a showbiz career. She must travel to Oz to achieve her big break, courtesy of the Wizard.
Naturally, the Wicked Witch of the West -- played by Miss Piggy -- is a factor, but Dorothy battles her with the help of the Scarecrow (Kermit the Frog), the "Tin Thing" (Gonzo) and the Cowardly Lion (Fozzie Bear). Queen Latifah, Jeffrey Tambor and David Alan Grier also star.
