I saw the news release this morning and it was printed as Hallows NOT Hollows.

The title will be Hallows not Hollows.
Hollow refers to something that has a hollow center such as chocolate with a hollow center or a hollow tree stump.
Hallow referrs to some sort of spirit which is more fitting to the theme for the HP series.

          Final 'Harry Potter' title announced
          Updated 12/21/2006 11:38 AM ET

Author J.K. Rowling has named the final Potter book
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

LONDON (AP) — We now have a title for Book VII: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. But if you want to find out for yourself, visit J.K. Rowling's website, jkrowling.com, and play a little game of hangman.

Rowling's U.S. publisher, Scholastic, Inc., released a brief statement Thursday announcing the name of the world's most anticipated children's book, the finale to her phenomenally popular fantasy series.

No publication date or other details were offered. Rowling is still working on the book, she wrote on her website in an entry posted early Thursday.

The author said she has been asked for years if she ever dreams she is in the boy wizard's world.

"The answer was 'no' until a few nights ago, when I had an epic dream in which I was, simultaneously, Harry and the narrator," she wrote.

"Perhaps I should cut back on the caffeine?" she joked.

"I'm now writing scenes that have been planned, in some cases, for a dozen years or even more," she added. "I don't think anyone who has not been in a similar situation can possibly know how this feels: I am alternately elated and overwrought. I both want, and don't want, to finish this book (don't worry, I will.)"

Rowling went on to say she had seen a 20-minute preview of the fifth Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which she said "looks fantastic." The latest movie in the blockbuster series will be released in July.

Meanwhile, she has set up a little game for her Potter fans.

If you go to her home page, click on the eraser and you will be taken to a room — you'll see a window, a door and a mirror.

In the mirror, you'll see a hallway. Click on the farthest doorknob and look for the Christmas tree. They click on the center of the door next to the mirror and a reef appears. Then click on the top of the mirror and you'll see a garland.

Look for a cobweb next to the door. Click on it, and it will disappear. Now, look at the chimes in the window. Click on the second chime to the right, and hold it down. The chime will turn into the key, which opens the door. Click on the wrapped gift behind the door, then click on it again and figure out the title yourself by playing a game of hangman.

Or you can just take Scholastic's word for it.

AAAugh! I just opened my email from Borders and came straight here. You guys beat me to it!! :lmao:

Wow. So....I wonder if she's finished it yet. On her website she said she's been having HP dreams... or nightmares.

I'm still holding out for 7/7/07/. That would be an exceptionally cool date to release the book.

Re: (Moved) Harry Potter book 7 name revealed

They're already hard at work in the Leaky Cauldron Forum. They may have worked out a connection to Authurian legend:

I love Arianhrod's explanation of the hallows of Arthurian legend:
The Hallows could refer to the Four Hallows of Arthurian legend. They are intimately connected to the Grail and ultimately probably go back to the Four Treasures of the Tuatha de Danaan of Irish myth.

                          The Four Hallows are:

                          The Cup or Chalice
                          The Baton or Wand
                          The Sword or Dagger
                          The Coin, Disc or Pentacle

I think we were right all along in connecting the horcruxes to the four elements. These hallows are associated with the elements, and match up quite nicely to the remaining horcruxes:

                          Cup (HH)
                          Baton or Wand (RR)
                          Sword or Dagger (GG)
                          Pentacle (SS locket)

                          Just my two knuts!

Excellent insight! The horcruxes would have been "hallows of tradition" in that they belonged to Hogwarts founders, but turned on their heads in the way that JKR loves to do because they've become evil instruments.

As well-read as JKR is, I'm sure this has played into her meaning. I'm not up on Arthurian legend, so my initial thoughts run like this:

I think it's an interesting point that Harry's parents died on Halloween. "Halloween" is short for "All Hallow's Eve," which is another name for the Eve of All Saint's Day. The idea was that the day before All Saint's Day, all manner of evil would roam the world, and then on All Saint's Day, those evil things would be banished. (Trick-or-treaters are acting out the evil things.) So Harry's saga starts on Halloween, and ends with saints banishing the evil.

Harry is not a Deathly Hallow, since it's "HP /and/ the Deathly Hallows," and there are more than one. I wonder if the "deathly" means that people die to defeat Voldemort. JKR has warned us that Book VI was just the beginning of the deaths. The title reminded me of the Gettysburg Address, which President Lincoln gave at a Civil War battleground, and he says, "we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground" because the people who died there had already hallowed it with their blood. Making something holy with blood is a very ancient idea, and not one that started with Christianity, either. That association, to me, sounds like several people will die fighting Voldemort. And they'll be considered martyrs by the wizarding community.

My guess is that Snape will be one of them, because I think he still considers he's got a debt to pay for Lily's murder. And, the only other person to be named in a title so far, the Prisoner of Azkaban, has also died.

But, as clever as JKR is, I think the title likely refers to both the horcruxes and the "saints" who help Harry defeat Voldemort.
Not bad for mere hours after the title was announced.
