Pirates finished 2006 as the #1 movie at the box office with over $423 million in U.S. ticket sales. Despite just being released to home video on December 5th, it also ranked #4 in U.S. DVD sales, trailing fellow Disney/Buena Vista releases The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe (#2) and Cars (#3). The Little Mermaid (Platinum Edition) and Chicken Little also finished among the top 10 DVD's. Warner Home Video's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was the #1 release.

Cars also ranked #2 at the movie box office and was the #1 grossing animated film.

In television, ABC had three of the top 10 regularly scheduled series including Dancing With the Stars at #3. Impressively, ABC also had each of the top five single telecasts with Super Bowl XL, the Super Bowl Post-Game show, the 78th Annual Academy Awards, the 92nd Rose Bowl Game and Grey's Anatomy.

The phenomenon that is High School Musical, which rewrote the book on how to synergize music, TV and home video, ended up as the #1 album of 2006. In second place was Rascal Flatts' Me and My Gang released under Disney's Lyric Street country label.

On Nielsen BookScan's lists, Mitch Albom's For One More Day (Hyperion Books) ranked #1 in adult fiction.

This is the first year that Nielsen has publicly released a compilation of year-end "Top 10" lists. The group promises to release similar lists on a regular basis in the future.
