  • Muppets as Munchkins: We're Not in Kansas Anymore - NY Times 05/20/05

Review from the New York Times - May 20, 2005
Muppets as Munchkins: We're Not in Kansas Anymore (free registration required)

Dorothy Gale's world has certainly changed since Judy Garland played the role in 1939. In "The Muppets' Wizard of Oz," which has its premiere on ABC tonight, the only gingham that Dorothy (Ashanti) wears is the checked apron required by her job at Auntie Em and Uncle Henry's diner. Dorothy lives with her aunt and uncle (Queen Latifah and David Alan Grier) in a double-wide trailer, and the only reason she wants to get out of Kansas is to become a singing star. Oh, and Toto? Not a dog.

Pepe the Prawn, a rather minor character in the Muppet universe, plays Dorothy's pet, and, unlike Toto the terrier, he can talk as soon as they land in Oz. The other lead roles are played by lead Muppets: Kermit the Frog as the Scarecrow, Gonzo as the Tin Thing, Fozzie Bear as the Cowardly Lion and the always glamorous Miss Piggy as the witches of the East, West, North and South.
