Are Geico's cavemen ready for prime time?

Is finding a way for marketers to beat commercial-zapping DVRs and helping networks to cure the distressed state of TV comedy so simple that a caveman could do it?

ABC's decision last week to greenlight a half-hour pilot program based on Geico's popular cavemen characters highlights the blurring line between advertising and entertainment, as well as the trouble the network has had in launching successful sitcoms.

Although the project is at a nascent stage -- there's no script and no cast -- plans call for the comedy to be titled "Cavemen" and focus on a trio of prehistoric characters who battle prejudice in modern-day Atlanta. Walt Disney's ABC will pay for the pilot and show, if one eventually materializes. Geico, a unit of Berkshire Hathaway, will have no creative control but will receive a royalty payment for the use of the characters.

I think the premise is pretty good. I'd watch it for a time or two.

I don't know if there would be enough material to carry them past 1 or 2 seasons.

I might watch it to check it out, but I won't go in expecting much.

I could see it as a bit of Dinosaurs meets Frasier...

I *love*love*love* the Geico caveman ads. Being in a minority, I can understand his frustrations about being discriminated or stereotyped. Too bad Geico itself is such a bad company to do business with. But I love the Cavemen.

How can this show be any worse than the crap that gets churned out by the networks?

Maybe they are finally retiring the concept of 'Fat, yet funny & lovable guy is married to a super-hot wife who loves him for being a plumber/garbage man/janitor, etc.?

I would watch it, I love those commercials, they are second only to the Trunk Monkey series, which was awesome.

Also, I have had GEICO for ten years, and I have been pleased with their service/prices.

I think I would feel like I was watching a 30 minute commercial.

Based on the description, doesn't sound like it will be a 30 minute Geico commercial. Sounds like they might distance themselves a bit from the Geico connection.

This is a rather risky show to propose.

I hope they use the same guy, he earned it in my book. I love when he is in therapy and he totally dogs the therapist.

Cute concept... not too obvious what you can do beyond 1 or 2 shows, but if they have
decent writing and/or acting, it could do well... heck, even "Mork & Mindy" went four years
pretty much riding on Robin Williams... And like Max said, the stuff that's out there right
                              now isn't much better.
