    Disney to Launch Family.com

    MARCH 13, 2007 -

The Walt Disney Internet Group announced plans to launch Family.com, a new parenting-focused content and community Web site. A beta version of the site, which goes by the moniker Disney Family, is set to go live later this week.

According to Disney, Family.com will feature a mix of aggregated and original service-oriented content geared mostly for moms, such as information on education and family travel. In addition, the site will host multiple outlets for parents to share and search for tips on child rearing, ranging from several parenting-themed blogs to user-built groups that will eventually serves as the parental equivalent of social networking. The site also features the Family 1,000, which allows parents to search though a list of a thousand Disney-recommended community sites.

While parenting information is not in short supply on the Internet, Disney executives believe that the rapid changes taking place in the way users consume online media in this user-generated era provides an opening for the company, given its trusted brand heritage. "Consumers, particularly parents, are engaging and interacting with new media like never before and are going online daily in search of answers to parenting related questions or to share experiences with other moms and dads," said Paul Yanover, executive vp and managing director of Disney Online. "In Disney Family.com, we have an opportunity to make the Internet an even better resource for families by incorporating Web 2.0 trends and combining that with the longstanding Disney heritage of serving families with quality entertainment and trustworthy information."

This is an effort to tap into the success of sites such as this one and mouseplanet. I like this site because of it's unofficial nature. I wonder how many of the other viewers/visitors feel the same way.
