    Digital 3-D meets the future!

Walt Disney Pictures proudly announced today that it's newest animated release, 'Meet the Robinsons' has set a new record by scoring the largest digital 3-D opening in history. The film grossed a very impressive $7.1 million on only 581 3-D screens.

It's called spin doctoring. Considering the Will Ferrel whumped them this weekend. The are grasping at any good news they can find.

Is an $8 million dollar gap considered a "whump?"

Spin indeed . . . . how many digital 3-D movies have gone into wide release?

Seeing as how 'Blades' opened on a LOT more screens- I doubt this is spin doctoring. MTR did very well in what is considered to be a more limited release.

MTR strength will be in its staying power. I expect to see it in the top 10 at least through the end of April. This weekend being a 3 day weekend will be good and bring big numbers for next weekend. Word of mouth marketing is going to be very effective here.

I don't think this news release had anything to do with them coming in second at the box office. Even the earliest of all projections indicated that Robinsons would be second to Blades. The film opened within Disney's expectations and most industry observers. The point of this announcement was to show that the interest in the 3D format is growing and to also make sure that people know Disney was at the forefront of this medium.

On a sidenote, 25 million is a fairly solid performance for a March release. Ice Age 2 was an exception. The film has also received a lot of good critiques from Disney fans... between that and the Easter vacation coming up, the film should continue to perform well.

            Have a good week!

BoG opened on 3,372 screens to MtR's 3,413. With virtually the same running time being the only thing in common with the two films, factor out lower kids ticket prices and the NCAA TV draw. MtR will continue to do well, especially with continued school holiday on the horizon.

The guy that should be looking to get back into goofball-mode is Adam Sandler. He may have won Favorite Male Movie Star at the Kids Choice Awards but kids nor apparently adults do not want to see him act. Maybe he should make an ice-skating movie...

ok, I was wrong, it just seemed that way. In the theaters in my area, BoG was showing on twice as many screens as MtR. Your analysis is accurate as usual

Thanks but with so many chains it does tend to look marquee-heavy with the "hot" names. Until Will Ferrell/Ben Stiller/Owen Wilson run out of genre-comedies it will continue.

I decided to take the family to Ontario Mills (Southern Calif.) to see Meet The Robinsons in 3D on Sunday. I was hesitant to shell out $39.00 for the tickets, but wow... Disney has PERFECTED 3D! What an amazing experience. I'm glad they will once again release Nightmare before Christmas this year, since I missed it last time.

And how many of them weren't Disney movies? lol
It's actually "Cars Land", not "Carsland".

Yeah Ontario Mills! LOL, I live a couple miles away from here. You saw it at the Edwards or AMC in 3D?
