  • Marie Antoinette

    What a film.

    Anyone else seen it?

I loved the use of 1980s New Wave music to help the audience connect better with the age and situation of the character.

    And of course, the cakes.

I picked up the Antonia Fraser book which inspired the movie, and I really wish the film had taken you to the end of her life, right up to her imprisonment and beheading. In the end I guess the right decision was made, because it does leave you wanting more, which is what all films should do, and it ends on a very atmospheric note.

I love Sofia Coppola's work. Marie Antoinette has replaced my previous favourite film, The Virgin Suicides - also a Kirsten Dunst/Coppola work.

I hated the movie the first time I saw it. the more I watched it the more it grew on me, but it did not follow the book closely. A lot of artistic liscense was used, Maybe they assumes everyone knew the story, but I knew nothing of it except for the basic beheading stuff.

I'm reading the book now and the movie could have been so much better and more accurate.

I can't believe how deep it was into her marriage that she actually succeeded in concieving. In the movie it lets you know she struggled, but not actually how long it really took! I really felt an empathy for her by the end of the book that I didn't feel at the end of the movie - when she's imprisoned and she's lost everything, she really does come across as such a pitiful character. It does make the movie interesting to watch over again though, just to see her general attitude - little did she know what was coming.

I thought the costuming and filming was amazing - the movie itself, a little long and boring.

But, it did inspire me to do a little brushing up on history - and it wasn't the conceiving part that shocked me - but the actual consumation of the marriage! I guess her hubby had a little bit of a problem.

I agree great costumes. The movie was okay I love period movies but this one did not make me fall in love with it.

              Re: Marie Antoinette

Overall I really liked it. I even liked that they used modern music, but I was thrown out of the draw of the film when they showed the purple high tops.

The only thing this movie made me want to do is read a book on the subject, because the movie did not cover it well. I loved the costumes though and although the music really bothered me at first I got used to it. It really wasn't fitting to the movie though.

I thought the movie was gorgeous, but it bored the heck out of me. Thanks for the screencaps, though! They're the best example of what I did like about the movie.

The movie was visually stunning, thats for sure.
The end was slightly dissapointing, it was so anti-climactic (not that I wanted to see the beheading or anything, but...)
I think I recall it being kinda slow at parts, but I also had to read the subtitles because I saw it in Paris over the summer (4 months before it came out here).
                        Overall pretty good

I thought the movie was ok. I just thought it dragged on at some points.

I liked Virgin Suicides much better.
