  • The OTHER 'High School Musical' hits New York

Where will it hit first: the courts or Broadway?

A writer in Texas came up with his 'High School Musical' in 2003, and saw it staged in Fort Worth in 2005. Six months later the Disney Channel Original Movie, 'High School Musical' aired and a franchise was born. The lawsuit is in the works and a free staged reading of his play will be held in New York on May 21st.

'High School Musical 2' will premiere Friday, August 17th on the Disney Channel.

Literally, yes. However, I don't think the 'original' author will come away empty-handed. While Disney won't be forced to stop the cash cow, the plaintiff will probably receive court costs and a settlement. Also, it will probably result in the 'original' production being re-titled and allowed to continue in a non-Broadway existence - which is what the author envisioned all along.
