  • Report: Disney to Package CD's with Downloadable Elements

Tech news watchdog CNET reports that Disney's Hollywood Records label will announce the launch of a new CD/digital download "hybrid" at a press conference scheduled for Wednesday. Specific details of the announcement have not been released.

CD sales have been lagging in the music industry with the rise of digital downloads. Disney has been one of the few success stories of late with strong CD sales for High School Musicial and artists such as Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana.

As expected, Hollywood Records announced today the launch of a new CD format called CDVU+ (CD View Plus). It will debut August 7th with the release of the Jonas Brothers' self-titled pop-punk album.

The CD format will have a higher memory capacity than current enhanced CD's. It can be viewed as a "digital magazine" with access to exclusive on and offline digital content including song lyrics, video segments and printable photos.

"While the CD is still the primary means by which people consume music, it is also true that music fans are increasingly turning to the internet to connect, research, and consume music," said Abbey Konowitch, General Manager at Disney's Hollywood Records. "To address the changing consumer expectations, we've created a recognizable physical product that also serves as a key to unlock content that is exclusive, interactive, tailored to the band's fans, and updatable."
