  • A Hollywood Star for Cliff Edwards

I have initiated an effort to obtain a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame for Cliff Edwards.

For those who aren't familiar with Cliff Edwards, he is the voice of Jiminy Cricket in Disney's Pinocchio. He sang "When You Wish Upon A Star." He also provided the voice for the crow in Dumbo who sang "When I See An Elephant Fly." Prior to his association with Disney, Edwards... aka "Ukulele Ike"... was a major recording artist of the 20s-30s selling over 74 million records. He introduced the songs, "Fascinatin' Rhythm", "Singin' In The Rain" and "It's Only A Paper Moon" among others. He appeared in over 100 motion pictures starring with the likes of Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Buster Keaton and many more.

Currently, the nomination is stalled for technical reasons. I'm working very hard to resolve the issue. I have become very passionate about this. There is a very real possibility, however, that the effort will fail. There is also the possibility that with massive popular support, it may succeed.

I promise to provide more detail soon. For now, though, I would like to know if anyone besides me is even interested. Please vote in the poll.

I AM NOT ASKING FOR YOUR MONETARY SUPPORT.

I'm only asking if you'd be willing to maybe write a letter or two if necessary. I think Mr. Edwards deserves that star. Are you willing to help make that possible?

    Count me in.

I'm honestly surprised to hear he didn't already have a star!! He was a huge star in his time.

My God...he did 10 times more than half those people that have their stars!

I've spotted him in a zillion movies! He was even in Gone With The Wind!

I would like to see this happen too. Just point me in the right direction.

Tom, what a wonderful thing to do and a wonderful idea. I think Cliff definitely deserves one. And how appropriate for the man who sang "When You Wish Upon A Star" to get his own on Hollywood Blvd. I'm in!

Cliff Edwards introduced this song in 1933. Enjoy:

I'm in too. He was talented, versatile and deserves to be honored on the Walk. I just watched "His Girl Friday" the other day (one of my all-time favorites), and there he was, playing a reporter.

I, too, am surprised he does not already have a star...

He really DOES look like Jiminy Cricket. They nailed his expressions.

It seems that you'd have a better chance of getting him a Star if the WDC was doing a Pinocchio reissue DVD that contained a documentary on him. Or the label that has his music on CD did a boxed set. Those Stars mostly happen because they help with a promotion of some sort and are funded as marketing.
