  • The Road to San Diego: A 2007 Comic-Con Photo Report

Hello folks! I'm here in my room at the Sofia Hotel down in Downtown San Diego (I almost said Disney) to enjoy the San Diego International Comic-Con, celebrating the popular arts.

I didn't take TOO many photos today as it was preview night and I was spending more time getting things ready to go, but I'll share with you what I DO have.

    But first, some fine notes:
    • The event began in 1970 with 300 attendees in the basement of the US Grant Hotel in Downtown San Diego
    • This is the 38th Comic-Con International and is the largest comic book and pop culture event in North America.
    • Comic-Con utilizes the ENTIRE San Diego Convention Center including 460,000 square feet of exhibit space and two floors of meeting space.
    • Comic-Con features all major comic book publishers, major toy and gaming companies, movie studios and much more.

And with that, I'm going to start the thread! Anyone else who wants to contribute in this is certainly welcome to! I'm gonna go work on photos now so hang in there!

Re: The Road to San Diego: A 2007 Comic-Con Photo Report

      WEDNESDAY. JULY 25, 2007. PREVIEW NIGHT. 6-9pm.

I drove down from Orange County to San Diego on a beautiful day.

And it took me about 2 hours to get down because of some unnecessary traffic.

But I finally arrived at my destination. The Sofia Hotel.

The first thing to do after checking in was to get my badge.

And once you GET your badge, you wait in line to get IN to the convention floor's preview night.

      The line.

And though I came alone, it isn't hard to bump into a few familiar faces. Without even a phone call, I ran into ELEVEN buddies of mine, all randomly. We all knew we'd be down here but it's easier to explore on your own and the meet up for food and drinks later.

      EXHIBITION FLOOR
The floor is the only thing open on preview night and I didn't get to see much at as I was waiting in line after line trying to obtain the convention exclusives.

Some full size Muppets that will be available eventually. I think Kermit is already on sale.

If you liked my Adidas TRON shoes, then you may like the Reebok VOLTRON shoes!

"Am I hallucinating or do I see voltron shoes?!" ~random nerd passerbyer

      The classic Batmobile!

Disney's Pirate booth setup. I'll have to check it out later.

      New Line's Golden Compass display

A new breed of Simpsons collectible:

      MORE PICS TO COME...

Great stuff I loved seeing the Castlevania figures. Did you get a pic of the Succubus? Its a shame that its the last of the Nightmare Before Christmas figures after wave 6 (the one pictured).

Thanks again for stopping by at NECA's booth and getting the figures for me.

            Preview Night continued...

They actually hired a one legged girl model to do this....

NBC has a booth for the first time.

            Random statue

            SIDESHOW COLLECTIBLES
Maker of fine Star Wars products, Sideshow Collectibles just aquired the license for Indiana Jones and the Godfather. Good times indeed!

Here's a fancy Iron Man they have made.

New 12" Bespin Luke will be pre-ordering in early August.

Snow bunny Padme Amidala is also forthcoming.

And then I went to Wendy's. Holy Geez!

But hey... if Zagat likes it...

And then I went to Ralph's to get some bottled water for the room. But found these on the shelf.

I think we've hit a new low, people.

I went to look for some Steel Reserve and WHOA they had it! But this sign was placed in front.

Oh and outside I saw Jess Harnell just hanging out. I haven't seen him personally since 2003 so it was cool to catch up again. (he's the voice of Wakko from Animaniacs, and Iron Hide and Barricade from the Transformers Movie. He said they're talking part 2 AND 3).

            Sucks for Eddie Winslow.

And that's all for night #1!!!! Time for bed.

              Get some sleep. Hasbro awaits.

The one-legged Cherry Darling model? Awesome

Running into the voice of Wakko Warner at random? Cool

If you look for a girl cosplaying as Alice in Wonderland, that that's littlecricket.

Just a heads up for you.

THanks for the pics. One of these days I will actually make it down there. Funny since I work in a comic store too. This year neither of us are going to make it. And this is only Preview Night? I would be happy just seeing that. Looks like enough stuff to see and buy right there. I don't know if I could make through every day. My wallet isn't that big.

The Hagrid Action figure is now being shipped from Big Bad Toy Store dot com. The Monster Book of Monsters is sold out just about everywhere but I found one at Geeks Store and it is in the mail.
Peter Pan Forever!!! I Will Never Grow Up.

                      Thank You Poisonedapples

It'd be fun if ALL of you were able to make it one of these days! Micechat could probably pre-book a huge block of rooms too!

                          Some pics from THURSDAY

                          My hotel:

The 7 minute walk to the convention center

                          tada!

                          sooooo many people

Thursday is the official first day of the convention and that's when you see the costumes start to come out of the woodwork!

At the hasbro booth, a lot more teasing about Indiana Jones...

This case will probably be where the new figures will be featured:

G.I.Joe celebrates its 25th anniversary. This comic-con exclusive 'pimp' Destro is COMPLETELY SOLD OUT FOR THE ENTIRE CONVENTION now. I was too late to aquire mine.

Firefly is one of my favorite classic Joe characters and he'll be coming out this year.

Shipwreck is another classic character waiting to be released.

                          MORE TO COME....
