This is a really good question, especially since it appears that High School Muscial 3 will have a theatrical release.

My guess is corporate politics. Somebody at the Disney Channel didn't want to lose all of that viewership and focus on the channel.

Tonight's television premeire expects to break all kinds of viewing records.....think of the advertising dollars Disney will be making....over and over again!

Since HSM already has a built in audience, Disney will sell the same amount of merchandise either way and as Yogurt from Spaceballs said, "Merchandising, merchandising, merchandising, this is where the real money from the movie is made." And also, Disney may have wanted to make sure the audience was still there. Creating all the prints neccesary for a wide theatrical release costs a crapload of money.

because people would burn down theaters. As many fans this thing has, it has more enemies

That and they will have less viewers with a theatre showing. They want to reastablish their audience, and show them plenty of commercials for their other DisneyChannel shows. They alos will have different types of veiwing over this weekend, (Normal, with cast and crew talking about it during breaks, a signalong version, and a popup version.) which gives them more opertunity for people to see their other programming.

And I'm planning on watching all three showings.

Disney Channel doesn't really sell advertising. Most of it's revenue
is from the Cable companies that carry the Disney Channel. Although
with higher ratings, they would be able to negotiate higher fees, but
              those contracts are done infrequently.

With the movie in theaters 1st, perhaps even a Sing-A-Long version,
and then place on tv 3 months later, then dvd's. They would no doubt have good revenue from the theaters, movie would still get high ratings on DTV (although not as high with a theatrical release).

It think it's a missed opportunity, a way they could have milked more
              money out of this thing.

It seems a lot of people are only looking at High School Musical 2. Disney obviously believes this franchise can stand a theatrical release. The question is really, why wait for High School Musical 3 to go theatrical?

Does Disney Channel even have any non-Disney advertising?

Yes they do. Dannimals has a lot of spots, so does McDonalds, and other companies I can't remember at the moment. Toon Disney has a LOT of outside advertising, they even have insurance companies on their line.

If they make HMS3 a Theatrical Feature, they better dump Kenny Ortega and get a real film director. His direction is so plain and dull. The guy brings nothing innovative to the table and his direction really doesn't take the story anywhere close to as real and lively as is needed for a theatrical feature.

He's right where he belongs. Directing TV movies. Uwe Boll is a better film director than he could ever hope to be.

High School Musical 3: Gradu-Dancin' (the official movie title) will be in theatres under the Walt Disney Pictures banner in October 2008. It then goes to DVD/BluRay in 2009, then PPV, then Starz (who owns the rights to all Disney films), and in 2010, goes to ABC or Disney Channel.

                      You have been warned.

To answer the original question, it's cheaper all around. Disney doesn't have to front production cost to make the reels of film, and parents don't have to front $40 for admission and another $30 for food.

But.... Kenny Ortega did Newsies, which was released in theatres.

I think there were way too much expectations just being on television. I don't think it would've made it as a release in theaters.
It's actually "Cars Land", not "Carsland".

Oh, yeah. Senor Ortega did a little movie about witches with Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker called Hocus Pocus.

It came out in June of 1997 instead of October and flopped.

Hocus Pocus is cute! It should have been in October, but it was a cute movie. The main character/guy in it is hot... well when it came out I was like 12 and he was very very cute. The movie came out in 1993. I was 12.

If they released HSM2 in theaters I wouldn't have seen it until next weekend. There's 1 theater up here and it's yucky. A lot of people I know wouldn't have seen it at all.
