'High School Musical 2' Blasts In At No. 1

    'High School Musical 2' cast

With the second biggest first-week sales tally of the year, the soundtrack to Disney's "High School Musical 2" bows at No. 1 on The Billboard 200. The set sold 615,000 copies in the United States according to Nielsen SoundScan, only a few thousand short of the 623,000 that Linkin Park's "Minutes to Midnight" moved in June. Since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991, only three other soundtracks have ever moved more than 615,000 in a week: Eminem's "8 Mile," "Titanic" and "The Bodyguard."

The first "High School Musical" soundtrack topped the chart numerous times last year and has sold 4.1 million copies to date. The Disney Channel's premiere of "High School Musical 2" on Aug. 17 scored 17.24 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research, making it the most-watched basic cable telecast of all time.

"I think we definitely knew it was going to do well, just because the first one did so well and there were so many fans," Corbin Bleu, who plays amiable jock Chad Danforth, told in a recent interview. "We knew all the people that enjoyed the first movie were gonna want to see the second movie. [But] we didn't know it was gonna become as much of a phenomenon."

A new episode of "Hannah Montana" aired directly after "High School Musical 2," helping Miley Cyrus' Disney double-disc set "Hannah Montana 2 (Soundtrack)/Meet Miley Cyrus" rise 4-2 with 83,000, a 10% increase in sales.

A 'High School Musical 2' takeover

    Head of the class:
Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron's duet is the No. 9 digital song.

Can we ever escape high school? Not on the Billboard charts this week. In its first week, the soundtrack to High School Musical 2 outsold the rest of the top 10, moving 615,000 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That's the second-best debut-week total for the year (just short of Linkin Park's 623,000) and the fourth-best tally for a soundtrack.

Ten HSM2 tracks enter the digital songs chart, selling 326,000 copies, topped by the 60,000-selling Zac Efron/Vanessa Hudgens duet You Are the Music in Me at No. 9. Add 25,000 copies of retail single What Time Is It and 20,000 copies of five charting ringtones from the soundtrack, and total HSM2 purchases add up to 986,000. And predecessor High School Musical jumped from No. 28 to No. 16 on the chart, selling 30,000 copies to bring the grand total to more than 1 million.

Hannah Montana 2 (benefiting from a new episode airing after HSM2) is No. 2 on the album chart, followed by the debut of Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds' Live at Radio City Music Hall, Now 25, Hairspray, UGK, Fergie, Jonas Brothers, Plies and Common.
