Disney Considering Multistep Transaction That Would Result in Radio Spinoff, Report Says

NEW YORK (AP) -- The Walt Disney Co. is considering a multistep transaction that would result in a spin-off of its radio stations and radio network group, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

Disney has long been believed to be considering an exit of the radio business ever since it acquired the stations and network in its 1996 purchase of Capital Cities/ABC, which also brought Disney the ABC and ESPN television networks.

Disney may still hold onto the radio group, which consists of 71 stations and a separate radio network. But with Robert Iger in line to take over from longtime CEO Michael Eisner in October, Disney could be in a position to make new plans for its role in radio.
Many analysts have called for Disney to Sell this unit... I find it interesting that now they want to spin it off... It is in profit...

Add in the TV network units, and I think Time Warner would buy it all up.

        There's probably an acceptable price.
And the money could go toward buying Pixar.

The article if you read it in full mentions the following at the end:

The Journal said interested bidders could include Citadel Broadcasting Corp., Entercom Communications Corp., and Emmis Communications Corp.

I had only skimmed the article, but there have been rumours flying around about the radio unit being sold for months. Clear Channel has been mentioned several times in the past as an interested party.

                Re: Spinoff of Radio Unit?

Disney had an opportunity to build a meaningful radio unit a few years ago - but they kept passing on acquisitions. Now they have a bunch of stations but not enough to have a large presence in the market...

The piece that is unclear is the Radio Disney stations/network - is that staying or going?

My gut is that a Emmis or Citadel will step in - Clear Channel has so many issues dealing with their media empire (radio and live events) - not sure if the market will enjoy another distraction from fixing their business..
