    'Transformers 2' 6-26-09

    'Transformers' sequel sets 2009 date

Paramount, Dreamworks expect Bay to return

    'Transformers'

    By Pamela McClintock
    Variety
    September 27, 2007

Paramount and DreamWorks are holding the date of June 26, 2009, for "Transformers 2," with Michael Bay expected to return to direct the sequel.

Despite the tensions between them, DreamWorks and Par have plenty of incentive to move forward with the next installment in the budding franchise.

"Transformers" starring Shia LaBeouf and based on the toy robot line, has grossed nearly $700 million worldwide, giving DreamWorks its first live-action franchise.

Still, the high-profile project isn't guaranteed total immunity from the ongoing battle of wills between DreamWorks' David Geffen and Steven Spielberg's and leadership at Paramount conglom Viacom.

The studios stressed that they are targeting the June 26 date, but that it isn't ironclad.

Even if Spielberg and Geffen exit their deal at Par, as they have threatened to do, the "Transformers" property stays at the Melrose lot, as do all other DreamWorks projects.

"Transformers" was a passion project for Spielberg, with DreamWorks developing the project and taking the creative lead after partnering with Paramount (that was before Par bought DreamWorks).

Spielberg, who took an exec producer credit on "Transformers," was closely involved with the film, including bringing Bay aboard to direct and LaBeouf to star. He's expected to be involved in the sequel.

Bay has not yet inked a deal to helm the follow-up but is in the final stages of negotiation. With Bay's involvement, LaBeouf is expected to return as well.

LaBeouf stars alongside Harrison Ford in Spielberg's upcoming "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," which opens May 22.

DreamWorks and Par are hoping to at least begin production on the "Transformers" sequel before a possible strike even if they have to finish after it.

Writing team built fast for 'Transformers 2'

    By Borys Kit
    The Hollywood Reporter
    Oct 4, 2007

    "Transformers"

Scribe Ehren Kruger and the writing team of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are in negotiations to team to write the screenplay for DreamWorks/Paramount's "Transformers 2."

Director Michael Bay, star Shia LaBeouf and producers Tom DeSanto, Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Don Murphy are back in their respective chairs, as is exec producer Steven Spielberg.

The teaming of A-listers to write such a huge project might be an industry first and could have been necessary because Kurtzman and Orci -- who wrote the $315 million-grossing first "Transformers" movie -- also are busy writing J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" movie for Paramount and producing "Eagle Eye" for DreamWorks.

But the teaming will not be a case of complete strangers being thrust together, as the three writers are working together on "Nightlife," a DreamWorks serial-killer project that sees Kruger adapting a Thomas Perry novel, with Kurtzman and Orci producing along with Neal Moritz. Kruger also adapted the Stephen King tome "The Talisman," which Spielberg is exec producing for TNT.

Sources are pegging the writing deal, which is not yet closed, in the $5 million-$7 million range, which also might be an industry high for a nonoriginal screenplay. Reflected in the price is the pressure to perform: With the studio hoping to make the movie before a potential talent strike, the writers are going to have to type fast.

Kruger met with Bay and Hasbro president Brian Goldner and impressed the duo with his knowledge of the "Transformers" mythology.

I'll be looking forward to another film, but I'm worried about their ability to make it happen in that time frame. Mainly because of the potential strike next year. I don't want to see them rush some sub par sequel into production just to beat the strike. I want to see them take the necesary time developing something equally as good as the first (if not better).

As a child of the 80's, Transformers are a part of my soul. The animated classic movie remains a favorite of mine to this very day.

Having just watched the first on DVD again:

-The movie is good, but not great. If it weren't for the nostalgia factor and the return of Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, I'm not sure I'd like the movie all that much.

-I hope they develop the characters more. Megatron and Starscream had almost no interaction, and the Decepticons in general were not developed.

-I'd like the character designs to be a bit more unique. It was hard to tell them apart a lot of the time.

This franchise has great potential, looking forward to part two.

I also hope that the focus goes more on the Transformers themselves in the next one. There obviously has to be a human element, but now that the first movie set all of that up, they can get more to the interaction between Decepticons and Autobots.

Well, I love Transformers because... well, it was part of my childhood. I really could have done without the people so I'd definately love more focus on the Transformers. I didn't realize that was the original Opitmus Prime, I thought it was just a really impressive imitator.

You can't take these movies seriously though. You just have to go into with the attitude that this is mental chewing gum that tastes yummy and has great special effects.
