Yes, but Disney has been doing that for a long time. Annette? Haley Mills? I don't like the short memory span this article has. It's not like a lot of these "stars" are gonna go farther than a few years, to be honest. I mean, why else is Zac Efron so tempted to work his way out?

No offense but perhaps Kurt Russell and Jodie Foster would've been better examples of a far more rare and expansive careers.

"Work his way out"? It's called working your way up, trying to establish a career beyond the 'HSM' franchise. He's starting a film called '17' soon and obviously on his way:
And look what's happened to Zac alone." After "High School Musical," Efron, 19, starred in "Hairspray," released last month, and he appears on the cover of the Aug. 10 Rolling Stone magazine. Paramount recently announced he will star in a film version of the musical "Footloose," scheduled for release in 2009. Ortega was chosen to direct.

'Hairspray' has made over $180 million worldwide thus far.

The original Mickey Mouse Club also served as a proving ground for talent. Tim Considine, Tommy Kirk, Kevin Corcoran, Bobby Burgess, our dear Annette, and so many others displayed real talents on TV in the '50s and in movies going into the '60s.
