Has anyone seen this? It's been selling out in Portland for a month now (they filmed here in town for months last fall), and my husband and I finally saw it Friday night.
He'd actually been cast as an extra in several scenes, but didn't end up doing it because I was out of town and he had the kids. Too bad! Would have been amazing!
We both really loved it. It's a beautiful film, a little long at 2.5 hours, but the scenery, acting and experiences of Alexander Supertramp more than make up for it. There are even some laughs here and there.
I read the book by Jon Krakauer a few years ago, and it's an unforgettable book. Christopher McCandless was an over-sensitive guy with an upper middle class upbringing with maaajor secrets who gave away his savings and "tramped" across the US without contacting his family with the goal of living off the land in Alaska. He met and befriended a series of people and they helped tell his story.
The movie does justice to most of the characters/people in the book. Hal Holbrook made me cry--he was so amazing. As was Catherine Keener. Vince Vaughn was really good. Kristen Stewart was beautiful.
Emile Hirsch was so good in most of the movie--he's in almost every scene of the movie. He's got a very River Phoenix thing going on....yum. His hair is amazing.
I think the movie's still in limited release, but it's worth seeking out. http://www.intothewild.com/
