  • The 12 animated features eligible for an Oscar released today

    Found this on Zap2It News:

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the 12 films eligible for the animated feature Oscar, a list that ranges from the literary ("Persepolis," "Beowulf") to the populist ("Alvin and the Chipmunks").

Also making the cut along with "Persepolis," "Beowulf" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks" are "Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters," "Bee Movie," "Meet the Robinsons," "Ratatouille," "Shrek the Third," "The Simpsons Movie," "Surf's Up," "Tekkonkinkreet" and "TMNT.

With 12 films eligible for consideration, the category will be open to only three nominees, as is the case in any year with at least eight, but fewer than 16 eligible offerings.

Of course, "Alvin and the Chipmunks," "Beowulf" and "Persepolis" have yet to have their required Los Angeles qualifying run.

The list includes six CG animated films, four traditional (or "more traditional") cel-animated movies, the motion-capture "Beowulf" and "Chipmunks," which combines CG and live-action.

Oscar nominations will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 22, while the awards will be presented on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, airing live on ABC.

I'm narrowing it down to the following:

    -Beowulf
    -Ratatouille
    -Surf's Up

with Ratatouille being the winner. Just my prediction.

I'm with you, but you can never tell with the Academy.

I'm thinking it's going to be Ratatouille as well.

Beowulf will never be nominated. Not because it's bad, but because it cannot qualify. The fact that it's motion capture automatically voids it from nomination...

...Simpsons will be nominated, trust me...

What do you mean it cannot qualify? It is listed above as eligible. That's the whole point of the article. The Academy announced the list of eligible films. While the Simpsons may be nominated instead of Beowulf, it is eligible.
If a live action movie with CGI characters (like Alvin and the Chipmunks) can be nominated so can Beowulf.

Wouldn't be hilarious if Aqua Teen got nominated? Never happen in a million years, but if it did I would laugh for hours.

Those are NOT eligible films, that is the list of films the studios' put out for consideration. Beowulf has not even received its qualifying run, and will most likely be booted come January. It happened to "Arthur and the Invisibles" as well...

Now I have taken a look at the actual press release from the Academy. Its does read differently. It states that the films on the list have been submitted for consideration. Now to me, that gives some credence to your statement. The way the person wrote the article is confusing. Bad form on their part.

On reading the rules from their website I see the following.

I think the Frame-by-Frame requirement is what you are refering to. There was no definition that I could find on their site, but it looks like you may be right. We will just have to see.

Personally I think the rule sucks. If a live action movie with a CGI character can be eligible, then a completely animated film using motion capture should be too. Out of curiousity, did the same thing happen to the Polar Express?

^Oh my god. Someone on the internet actually did their homework before responding?! I owe you much gratitude, Melonballer...

EDIT: Oh, and the rule was just added after the controversy over Happy Feet's win (which ironically won for the message, not the actual animation and film itself)...

I generally like to check my facts before posting them. The article said one thing, you said another. I thought it was time to see what the Academy said.

Meet the Robinsons is on its way for me from Netflix so I look forward to watching it.

And if Beowulf isn't eligible, I'll be happy with that. I only predicted it would be in the running because Robert Zemeckis is attached. Though I absolutely hated Polar Express.

I just watched the trailer for Persepolis. I probably will not have a chance to see it until it is released on DVD, but it looks great.

It should be nominated, but the academy can be weird or really cool sometimes. I still smile when I remember the year they nominated Howl's Moving Castle, Corpse Bride and Wallace and Grommitt. The only way I see Persepolis not getting nominated is if it stays under the radar. It also going to be interesting to see if Beowulf is a success. If it is critically and box office successful I wonder if the academy may change the rule again.

At this point I think we are going to see Ratatouille, Persepolis and a third film nominated for the Oscar.
