  • Disneyland's 'Small World' attraction to get upgrade - LA Times, 11/9/07 (MiceAge)

Our writers bring you the most fascinating destinations on the West Coast.

Heavier-than-anticipated loads have been causing the boats to come to a standstill in two different spots, allowing for an extra-long gander at the Canadian Mounties and the Scandinavian geese, said Al Lutz, whose website MiceAge first reported the refurbishment plans.

"If these boats get stuck . . . they have to send someone back in there to lighten the load on the boat," said Lutz, who has been on the ride when a guest or two was asked to disembark.

"They've even built a platform next to that [Mounties] curve because they've had so many problems."

Disneyland plans to add an inch of depth to the water channel and design more-buoyant boats, Lutz said.

Perhaps in an effort to protect visitors' egos, the park insists that fat tourists aren't to blame.

The boats get stuck because "layers and layers" of fiberglass have built up where maintenance teams have patched and re-patched problem areas, said Disneyland Resort spokesman Bob Tucker.

"The only thing that's true is that we are going down in January and it's for 10 months and it's to replace the flumes," Tucker said.

But Disneyland is well aware of America's expanding waistlines.

In recent years, the park has redesigned many of its costumes and started stocking them in larger sizes to accommodate ever-expanding waistlines.
Adult men and women are about 25 pounds heavier than they were in 1960, and 65% are considered overweight, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. The average weight for men jumped from 166 pounds in 1960 to 191 pounds in 2002; women average 164 pounds instead of 140.

Of course, this is a world of fantasy and the perfect place to forget about that diet for a few hours. So when somebody gets booted from the boat, Lutz said, Disneyland ride operators make sure the guests don't leave disappointed: They hand them a food ticket.

    Churro, anyone?

While this is extremely funny, I find it kind of sad. This is just another supporting piece of evidence showing how fat Americans are becoming. Because of us (not me or anyone inparticular, but the American nation as a whole), we are forcing Disney to spend money on preventable damage when that money could have gone toward new, cool attractions.

As the end of the article indicates, Disneyland does partly contribute to the growing waistlines by having churro and dessert stands throughout the park that are quite expensive.

The LA Times article has created some new news articles, basically using the LA Times as the source of quotes, here are a few...

        From the United Kingdom...

But visitors, former employees and self-appointed Disney watchers all attest to the frequent occasions on which the boats on "It's a Small World" back up because a vessel carrying more pounds per square inch than anyone could have reasonably envisaged back in 1964 has ground to a halt.

"The Cast Members [Disney employees] operating the ride try their very best to eyeball the girth and size of the riders coming down the line and purposely leave a row or two empty on many boats," an assiduous Disney watcher called Al Lutz reported on his website this week. "Even those discreet tactics don't always work with today's riders."
And for the word of the day....

FYI, the original LA Times article was in Friday's Printed version of the paper on the bottom of the front page of the Business Section.

And here is one from Australia...

The main paper in France picked up the AP version of the story...

It's just as much proof that when you do maintenance on 45 year old fiberglass flume you have to remove the last three patches before adding yet another, especially when the patches are on the inside. An inch of lowered draft in the channel can and does make a huge difference, as those problem areas point out.

The boat flume they used to build Small World was originally designed to be a portable carnival ride, where it was to be disassembled and trucked to the next location weekly, and minor leaks betweeen sections would soak into the dirt under the tent.

It was never designed to be permanently installed without the bolted and gasketed joints between the flume sections being maintained, and to not leak because there's a finished floor and electrical equipment in the building. And it's full of water year-round and never has a chance to 'relax' and realign itself under normal thermal expansion and contraction. And was never designed for a seismically active area where there are little Magnitude 2 and 3 earthquakes on a regular basis to shift things around...

And then they fiberglassed the inside of the flume at the joints to "fix the leaks" and started losing draft.

The outside areas were long ago converted to a concrete channel with permanent ramps and boat handling equipment at the Load/Unload area, now they have to update the rest.

They redid it also in 2004 if im not mistaken, because me and the family went there and Its A Small World was closed because they were re-doing it ((just my luck)).

Actually, that is not true, every year it has been drained, and since the holiday version has come on line, drained twice a year, so for at least 4 weeks a year it has had a chance to "relax".

I wonder why they aren't having a similar problem with the other 'boat' rides. Or perhaps they are?

My guess is because IASW is the most popular and receives the most activity. While Splash Mountain is a boat ride, the boats aren't moved by treads throughout the ride. You have the drops and water propullsion.

Yes, Pirates has been known to get a boat stuck on occasion.

Also a couple of Dark rides in Fantasyland have had problems.

Basically the "older" designed rides which had a different "standard" (If you weren't trying to be PC, less weight are the ones that need to be upgraded.

Even Casey Jr. had problems, and has had to have its lift hill chains and motors upgraded to handle additional weight.

They are, but not nearly to the level of severity that Small World is having.

Pirates is the closest in design at the park, the Small World boats and the Pirates bateau's are almost identical. (And now someone's going to nit-pick all the little details... ) Both rides have enough boat capacity (15 to 20 riders depending on size) that they can be overloaded easily with too many people packing a "stealth" extra 50 Lbs that don't look it.

The differences are that Small World is pure boats in a fiberglass flume that has gotten shallower at points by patching.

Pirates has wheels on the bottom of the boats for negotiating the drops and the Waterfall lift at the end, runs in a concrete channel through flooded rooms, and the designers allowed for more draft depth under the boats. And Pirates has security cameras everywhere, so they know about problems almost instantly.

Where Pirates has their problems surface is boats getting stuck at the safety gates before the two drops, and loading onto the "Up The Waterfall" scene lift-chain at the exit.

Splash Mountain also has "hybrid" logs with roller-coaster style wheels underneath - the second drop is a fake-out that has a roller coaster dip, rise and splashdown, and the wheels are also in play on the big drop. Those same wheels will work along the bottom of the concrete flume if the log is overloaded.

... and the other boat rides have gone through various changes since opening.. different boats... numerous overhauls..

Isn't IASW basically using the same boat design as the original?
