Has Blu-Ray won this thing yet? I'm starting to feel that HD itch - I'm going to be ready to convert in the next year or so - but I just can't shake this terrible feeling that it's too early to decide. I've been expecting HD to take it in the same way that VHS, as the lesser-quality format, won the home video format war.

VHS won the videotape format war because Sony would not allow porn to be transferred to its Beta format.
The concern was that HD-DVD would win via the same route (as Sony has taken the high road again with Blu-Ray), but even the porn industry realizes the negative return of High Def in its work. Better to be a little grainier.

Let's hope that HD-DVD calls it quits and throws in the towel instead of fighting a now unwinable fight. As soon as consumers know that one format is the standard, you will see a lot of machines and DVD's sold

            FYI -

The hardcore stuff is going (or has gone at this point) Blu-Ray. There is some good numbers in the link below. But Digital Playground claims to hold 80% of the HD pron market. Them along with Vivid who has been doing Blu-ray porn for some time now really make up the major players.

Previously HD DVD-exclusive adult distributor Digital Playground will go dual-format with the Blu-ray release of 'Pirates' in early January.
As we've previously reported, Digital Playground made headlines earlier this year when one-named auteur Joone (the company's founder) was quoted as saying that his company was forced to change HD allegiances after all Blu-ray Disc copying facilities in the United States refused to accept his business.
Said Joone at the time, "Sony wants me to publish my films on HD DVD."
Though the Blu-ray Disc Association denied a coordinated effort to block the release of adult titles on the format (and indeed Vivid Entertainment went on to release its first Blu-ray title

And even Girls Gne Wild is doing Blu-Ray (But can you really call GGW porn?)

                  DVD group cancels preview show

                  By Thomas K. Arnold
                  The Hollywood Reporter
                  Jan 6, 2008

The North American HD DVD Promotional Group has abruptly canceled a planned two-hour extravaganza Sunday night in Las Vegas on the eve of the Consumer Electronics Show, at which it was to preview upcoming releases and show off the latest advances in special features.

The cancellation came in the wake of Warner Home Video?s announcement Friday that it is dropping support for HD DVD and after May will exclusively release high-definition titles in the rival Blu-ray Disc format. The Warners move dealt a mortal blow to the underdog HD DVD camp, leaving it with just two of the six major studios.

Ken Graffeo, the Universal Studios Home Entertainment executive vp who serves as co-president of the North American HD DVD Promotional Group, late Friday confirmed rumors that had been circulating all day on the Web that the event had been canceled.

"Based on the timing of the Warner Home Video announcement today, we have decided to postpone our CES 2008 press conference," a statement from the group said. "... We are currently discussing the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluating next steps. We believe the consumer continues to benefit from HD DVD's commitment to quality and affordability -- a bar that is critical for the mainstream success of any format. We?ll continue to keep you updated on new developments around HD DVD."

Paramount is dropping HD as well. bye bye HD.

Blu-ray appears to have won the high-def DVD format war, as Paramount announced on Monday that it would dump HD-DVD in favor of Sony's Blu-ray format. Last week, Warner Bros. also threw its weight behind Blu-ray.

The developments likely mean the end of HD-DVD as a viable format. Based on the studios' decision, Japanese content producers and hardware manufacturers said they would likely leave the HD-DVD Promotion Group, according to published reports.
Pony Canyon, a content producer that is part of Fuji Television, predicted it would "choose Blu-ray in the end." Some 20 members of the HD-DVD coalition said their continued membership was "under review." Universal is the only remaining U.S. studio backing HD-DVD, along with one other major corporation that continues to support the format: Microsoft.

Hope that new Microsoft exhibit in Innoventions doesn't mention HD-DVD. It could be a thing of the past by the time it opens.

Actually Paramount isn't dropping HD-DVD at least not yet. They have since reported that the original story about them dropping it was wrong. Either way its only a matter of time now I'd think.

Paramount has not dropped HD-DVD. There were rumors flying around Monday about this which turned out (unfortunately) to be false. Perhaps their hands are tied after all with that 18-month contract?

Jan. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures denied a newspaper report that the studio is poised to follow Time Warner Inc. in abandoning Toshiba Corp.'s HD DVD technology. ``Paramount's current plan is to continue to support the HD DVD format,'' Brenda Ciccone, a spokeswoman for Paramount, said in an e-mail today.
Toshiba, the leading promoter of the HD DVD format for high- definition video discs, fell in Tokyo trading after the Financial Times reported Paramount is poised to adopt Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray format instead.
Rumor has it that Warner Bros has triggered an "out" clause for Paramount on the exclusivity deal. But though Paramount is "poised" (according to reports) to drop HD-DVD, nothing has been announced yet.

Of course Paramount doesn't want it announced they are dropping HD-DVD. Their HD-DVD version of Zodiac comes out in a few weeks.

Paramount has formally denied any intention to abandon HD DVD.

                              In the long run, however...
