    Another 'Nightmare' for New Line

    By Borys Kit
    The Hollywood Reporter
    Jan 30, 2008

    "A Nightmare on Elm Street"

    Freddy's back. Again.

New Line is in talks with horror production company Platinum Dunes to re-launch the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" movie series, the franchise that helped establish the studio.

Partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form will produce the redo.

The first "Nightmare" movie was made by Wes Craven and released in 1984. The runaway success of the film spawned a slew of films and created one of the most popular villains in screen history, Freddy Krueger, played by Robert Englund.

The films' premise centered on Krueger, a serial child killer murdered by angry parents, who returns with a burnt face and a razor glove to terrorize teens in their dreams.

A writer will be hired once the strike ends. The producers are hoping to center part of the new movie on Krueger's backstory.

Platinum Dunes is prepping another re-launch, "Friday the 13th," which will be directed by Marcus Nispel for New Line, for whom they remade "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and its sequel.

The company is remaking "Near Dark" for Rogue and "The Birds" for Universal. It is also prepping a non-remake project, an untitled David Goyer thriller.

I'm tired of everything having to be remade. If a NOES movie doesn't have Robert Englund as Freddy, than it isn't a NOES movie. The best thing to do is make great sequels that stay true to the spirit of the original movies like Rambo and Rocky Balboa did for their franchises. I hate the way almost everything has to be modernized for today's MTV and ADD generation.

I can't wait for the Saw remake that comes out in 10 years with Ryan Seacrest as Jigsaw.

Johnny Depp's career was kick-started when he was sucked into a bed in the first film & he appeared in a cameo as a favor to Wes Craven in another film in the series. One can only hope there will be some new redeeming quality to be discovered in this simply fabulous news.

At least he is producing not directing. Of course, if I had it my way Michael Bay and those guys who made Date Movie, Epic Moive, and Meet the Spartans would be exiled to an island full of cannibals.

Thank god I'm not the only member of the Despise Michael Bay Club.

                As for more Freddy...

Ugh. How many sequels do they think they have to make? So much for "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare". And more on his backstory? Didn't they do that already? I remember Alice Cooper played his nutty dad.

I wouldn't say I "hate him" since he never really did anything to me personally...let's say I am deeply disappointed with his film making ability.

I don't get this at all. I also don't understand the "reboot" of Friday the 13th.

Freddy vs Jason was so damned good I don't see why they didn't follow that up with more movies with THOSE actors (at least Englund) playing THOSE versions of the characters.

My feelings exactly. Freddy VS. Jason was as good as a relaunch of the two franchises that we could ever hope for. Let's be glad that they did FVJ before the remakes, so we wouldn't be stuck with the remake characters fighting instead of the real ones.
