Alan Menken to Be Inducted Into Songwriters Hall of Fame

    Alan Menken

Academy and Grammy Award-winning songwriter Alan Menken is among the 2008 inductees to the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Menken, who is currently represented on Broadway with Disney's The Little Mermaid, will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame at the 39th annual awards dinner, which will be held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City June 19.

An alumnus of the BMI Lehman Engle Musical Theatre Workshop, Menken has earned eight Academy Awards, ten Grammys and seven Golden Globes. He will be honored alongside songwriters Desmond Child, Albert Hammond, Loretta Lynn and John Sebastian.

Menken's Academy Award-winning compositions include "Under the Sea" from Disney's "The Little Mermaid," "A Whole New World" from "Aladdin," the title song from "Beauty and the Beast" and "Colors of the Wind" from "Pocahontas." His screen musicals also include "Newsies," "Hercules," "Enchanted" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" – which was later adapted for the stage.

Menken also composed the oft-produced musical Little Shop of Horrors, as well as Weird Romance, A Christmas Carol, Sister Act: The Musical, and the ambitious oratorio King David.

Founded by Johnny Mercer, Abe Olman and Howie Richmond in 1969, the Songwriters Hall of Fame celebrates songwriters, educates the public with regard to their achievements, and produces a spectrum of professional programs devoted to the development of new songwriting talent through workshops, showcases and scholarships.

A well deserved award for Mr. Menken. Hopefully, one day we'll see his late writing partner Howard Ashman honored as well.

BTW, I really enjoyed visiting the Songwriters HOF website at www.songwritershalloffame.org. It's online "exhibits" of early to mid 20th century songwriters (the Gershwins, Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, etc.) are particularly well done. I don't know if they've quite grasped the contributions of post-1950s pop/rock songwriters, though. Lennon-McCartney, Holland-Dozier-Holland, Jagger-Richards, Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan are all deservedly there. But what are Don McLean, John Denver and Hall & Oates doing on the list? And why haven't Pete Townshend, Prince or Bono/U2 been inducted yet? I couldn't figure out from looking at the website exactly what the criteria was for induction, but there are some downright head scratching honorees, not to mention glaring omissions.

Oh, and for you Disney fans, the Sherman Brothers were inducted in 2005.

ORWEN: I just LOVE Alan. Us Cauldron girls were lucky enough to meet him at the El Capitan in 2006. (He even said we looked familiar to him!) Anyway, we still can't understand why none of the songs from ENCHANTED won anything at the Oscars--especially when you compare them to the one that DID win!!! I mean, really! Alan Menken should have won again!! Sometimes you have to just wonder what those judges at the academy are smoking...
