My work just put up a new filter this past Monday and now MiceChat is banned for "inappropriate content." All of the other Disney sites are just fine, it is only MC. Any idea what the content could be that would cause it to be banned? I miss my fix during lunch!

Re: MiceChat Banned! Any ideas why?
Perhaps the word "chat" in the domain?

You were viewing the website too much. If your job controls which websites are blocked then that means the admin is probably seeing what sites get viewed the most. Did your job have a filter before Monday? Either way the sites you visit can/do get logged by the system admin so I'm guessing that if your job has an admin it was blocked because it was a site you frequent. I'm not saying you aren't being productive, it's just that this is a common thing for employers to do.

Re: MiceChat Banned! Any ideas why?
Some employers also keep track of where employees are going online, and slowly start to block websites they spend the most time on.
My last company got so fed up with employees using internet they put a password on accessing it, only higher ups were allowed, and prior to the password, the worst offenders were let go.
Remember your at work to work, not surf the net.

Most work places have a policy similar to mine which state that the Internet is to be used for business purposes only. Therefore if you are accessing non business related sites using an office computer at any time during the day you are in violation of company policy and could be instantly terminated. If you are surfing the web strictly during lunch time you may have an argument, but because you are using company equipment for non business purposes the company would still be within their right to terminate you for violating the Internet policy.
I used to frequent Micechat at work as well, but it got blocked after some time, not coincidentally after my boss caught me glancing at it. A work-around though is you could still access it in your smart phone, but even then most many places like my own have policies that limit personal cell phone use while on the clock. Although if you do limit this to your lunch and break hours this probably would not be in violation as most policies allow you to use your personal cell phone during breaks and lunch.

Anyway, I set up a "guest" network including wifi, with internet access at my office, that is not connected to our main network. We still have filtering on it for obvious reasons. But it allows visitors and employees on break to access personal email or do some surfing without putting our main system at risk for malware.Last edited by Steveman; 08-29-2012, 08:15 AM.

Re: MiceChat Banned! Any ideas why?
It's usually related to software that's used to filter out access to certain types of sites or parts of various domains. Sometimes it's based on the URL and certain words involved, most times it's related to certain tags listed on that website. My work filters out all sorts of websites, including most blogs, many (but not all) message boards, most social networks, anything food-related, entertainment-related, sports-related, politics-related, gambling-related, finance-related, and so on and so forth, along with specific types of known sites that are blocked. The definitions for the software often change, too (kinda like antivirus definitions), and sometimes, even sites that are needed in my job will get filtered out, and we have to notify a supervisor and have IT fix it so it's allowed.
Anyway, MiceChat is entertainment-related, so that right there will get it blocked at many workplaces. "I'm doing it on my lunch hour" - so what? Doesn't matter to them. Not your computer. It's their equipment, their network, their right to manage it. You don't have rights. You're not a human being. You're a slave, so get back in your cubicle and do your job. They're not paying you to goof around on the internet like you do at home. They're paying you to do something else. So do that something else and then leave on time and then come back on time and don't complain or they'll fire you and get somebody else, somebody who's willing to obey their rules for less money than you.
Isn't capitalism wonderful?

On the Smartphone. We are allowed to surf the web during breaks and lunch. MC is the only Disney site I go to which has been banned. Wonder if it is because of the word Chat?Originally posted by migoI poop with joy!

Re: MiceChat Banned! Any ideas why?
Go ask your IT staff why it's blocked. If you are not comfortable doing that, then yeah, you probably are better off waiting until you get off work to do the Disney..."Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect."

Re: MiceChat Banned! Any ideas why?
Talked to IT and she had no idea why it was blocked. Our filter is mainly for porn sites. Also double checked and yes, we can surf during lunch and breaks. I gave her MiceChats site and she is going to check it tonight at home and see if she can figure out why it's blocked. (Did I mention that she is a Disney fiend as well. lol) Right now she has no idea why the filter is stopping it.Originally posted by migoI poop with joy!
