D23 presents "Disney and Dickens"

Join Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim and your fellow D23 members for an evening of Dickensian delights as you meet at the historic El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood to experience the new Robert Zemeckis film Disney's A Christmas Carol, starring Jim Carey, Bob Hoskins and an all-star cast in this new retelling of Charles Dickens' timeless holiday favorite. As you settle into your reserved VIP seat, enjoying tunes from the mighty Wurlitzer, the festive holiday pre-show and the film itself, make sure you don't get too full from the complimentary popcorn and soda because following the movie, you'll re-join the group for a holiday feast at the classic Los Angeles eatery, the Tam O'Shanter in the city's Los Feliz area.

The Tam O'Shanter was a favorite restaurant for Walt Disney and his animators, and was often referred to as the Studio Commissary when Walt's fledgling company was located in the neighborhood. From the moment you pull up to this quaint, cottage-like Scottish establishment, you will be transported to another time and place. Decked out in its holiday finest, the Tam is a cozy, traditional Scottish restaurant where Christmas goose and succulent prime rib await. As you dine with your fellow D23 members and their guests, you'll have the opportunity to see Walt's table, take a look at the wonderful artwork created by Disney animators for the Tam, and be entertained by Dickens Carolers, as well as an ensemble from the Disney Employee Choir, who will sing their favorite Disney Christmas songs.

So come with your appetite and warm up your vocal chords, because this will be anything but a silent night. Oh, and don't forget that Christmas is a time of giving and your friends at D23 would never let you leave without a special holiday gift to commemorate the evening!

Time: Check-in begins at the El Capitan at 6 p.m.; Screening begins at 7 p.m.
Tickets: Tickets will be available Thursday, October 15 at 10 a.m. PST. Members may bring up to three guests.
Cost: $95 per person

If you go to the Tam O' Shanter, I highly recommend the chocolate souflee'. You have to order it early, because they make them individually, but it's SOOO worth it.

I understand why the price is what it is. It makes sense. I just wish they had a regular screening of the movie (like the Up event). I would love to see "Disney and Dickens" at the El Capitan as a D23 event. I just feel like by making all the events more upscale and costly they are alienating their younger members, and others who don't have that kind of dough. I, along with probably several others, had to stretch for the $75 member fee. Like I said, the price makes sense, I understand why they are charging so much... but does the event have to be that upscale? Why can't they just show the movie?

Don't get me wrong. I love D23 so much and am happy that I am a member. I'm just not entirely pleased with the new direction they are taking. Isn't that what Club 33 is for?

I wonder how many seats this will be and if it is a d23 exclusive event.

The theater clearly seats a large number, but i dont think there's a restaurant in the world that will feed that many people, so I doubt its going to be a full house...

But i definitely am interested in doing this.

I can understand totally where you are coming from; but also try to understand that a lot of people appreciate these kind of events also.

Making it a premium event (with a premium price) will also make it more available to members who are willing to pay the price but who might not have been able to get tickets in the frenzy over the free events.

Also, just because they have added these premium events, don't assume that the other events will cease completely. I'm sure there will still be events for free and low cost like the ones that came in the first months. Just think of these as an added benefit for those that want them. This way, D23 is accommodating a much wider array of members, with events that are desired by a large segment of members. Not every event can please every member.

If you go to the Tam O' Shanter, I highly recommend the chocolate souflee'. You have to order it early, because they make them individually, but it's SOOO worth it.

For large events, the Tam O'Shanter usually has a pre-set menu. So attendees will just have to hope that the souffle is one of the dessert choices.

You're right. However, since both the Fall and the Winter events are premium, it made me wonder if they will offer free and/or cheaper events again. I certainly hope they will. I think that could be great if they offered a wide range of events -- some cheap and some more premium.

Or maybe they could even offer this event without the dinner option... That would be nice!

The El Capitan Theatre holds over 1000 people so no this is not a full capacity situation, either at the theatre or the far smaller restaurant. The 12/10 showings are already on sale so it's obviously a limited number of the $28 VIP seating seats being held back for this D23 2-part event.

The irony of this event just sickens me. I would love to go, but I'm going to be at WDW in Florida all this week, on a trip that was planned over two months ago.

What irony you ask? I live less than 10 mins from the Tam O'Shanter in Los Feliz! I have been going there my whole life. My MOM has been going there since she went to Marshall High School (also my alma mater) in the 50's! (Marshall High is about a block from where the original Disney Studios was on Hyperion Ave.)

And where will I be when the first D23 Disney event happens in my own neighborhood? I will be in Orlando! inch:

But that's the thing - you can go to the Tam O'Shanter any old time you want, spend far less than $67/person (i.e., $95 event cost - $28 ticket cost) on your dinner and even order the world-famous souffle, if that's what you want!

This event is a real head-scratcher to me... the carolers and the lovely parting gift are the only things I can't get myself for less money.

Frankly, much of what D23 does is a head scratcher for me. I had more to say but I think I will just leave it at that.

So does next year's membership go up to $80? Or just a small increase like $77?

Tam O'Shanter is also participating in Restaurant Week until October 16th where lunch is $22 and dinner is $34 including the chocolate souffle.

I too wouldn't hesitate to reserve for this event, I just hate doing these things alone and also need a ride to this place, but I won't pay an additional $95 so someone can come with me and attend the event with me...

Is anyone thinking of going to the restaurant from the theater by metro? I'm thinking of doing this but have never used the metro before. I was just wondering how safe and good the metro is. If you have any tips I'd like to hear it. Thank you.

how do you plan on getting home after the restaurant. I don't think the metro is a 24/7 service

Hi ryanvalle. I have someone picking me up at the restaurant when it's over. I just need to find a way to get there from the theater! So I was asking how the metro is.
