Cars Land came from the idea of needing to do something with DCA. "(DCA) wasn't up to the level of a Disney park in my mind"

Lasseter says DCA needs a sense of place like Disneyland has. At Disneyland "you're transported to another place and time" and that what was needed at DCA.

Lasseter: California has "incredible car culture" Talking about childhood inspirations for Cars films.

Lasseter: Disney bought Pixar and started talking to Bob Iger about bringing Cars to DCA.

Before Cars Land, WDI was already working on ideas for car/route 66-themed area.

Kevin Rafferty originally worked on "Carland" for DCA based on Route 66 and featured a "Cruise Street"

Featured ride called "Roadtrip USA" an ended with rainbow caverns type ending and a car wash.

Lasseter felt very strongly about DCA needing characters. "Let's get the characters back in there!"

Liked Carland idea, suggested character overlay with Goofy.

"Cars" came out and Cruise Street and Cars-themed attractions were merged together. Carand became Cars Land and became completely based on the movie.

Lasseter said DCA was trying to be too many things at once so it made sense to make it completely "Cars"-themed instead of multiple characters and concepts. Bob Iger loved the idea.

Radiator Springs Curios is "as kitschy as ever".

Luigi's Tires is like a "giant air hockey table you get to ride on"

Mater Jamboree: "I'm not kidding you, this is one of the most fun rides"
Ladybug boogie just goes on figure 8, but jamboree is double in size. Giant Jukebox out of car parts will provide music for the ride. Original songs for Mater. Queue area will use Bountiful Valley Farm "sheds" as shaded queue area and feature memorabilia from Mater's Tall Tales.

Radiator Sprigs Racers: Six acres. Biggest ride Disney has ever done. Biggest E-Ticket ride ever.

Lasseter wanted a thrill ride with real storytelling added. Went to Florida and rode test track, loved ride system, and wanted it for Cars Land. Imagineers originally said no to test track system because of early mechanic issues with Test Track.

Start with a drive with Sally, head into town. Sherrif slows you down, Mater takes you tractor tipping, Franklin takes you into town, everyone welcomes you. One car goes into Ramones for paint job, the other car goes into Liigi's for new tires for the race.

As you come out, you're side-by-side with the other car and then Doc gives you pointers and then your race starts. Ride goes 40MPH.

RSR has steep turns, camel hops,

Put Cars character overlay on Test Track ride vehicle.

Two car styles. One like a Ferrari, one a convertible. Some boy cars some girls. Different color cars.

Imagineer who sculpted Tree of Life and Tokyo Disney Sea volcano sculpted the Cars Land rock work.

Kathy Mangum now talking. Update on construction progress.

Trying to complete Cars Land mountains (at least portion closest to track) by end of this week so they can start rids testing

"You cannot believe how big the rock work is. It just towers above you. It's like you're really there" - Lasseter

Pressed tin ceilings, woodwork for shelving, lots of car-themed accents for store interiors.

Flo's V8 views are beautiful. Jokes about fast passing restaurant because people won't want to leave

Getting ready to test Flying Tires soon. Ride vehicles are arriving. Multiple colors with matching names: Alfredo, latte, espresso, etc

Flying tires have levers that you push to make your tire spin - an innovation over original flying saucers.

Stanley Oasis and other original Radiator Springs buildings will be on queue of Radiator Spings racers.

Kathy says he banked turn are "what are going to get your attention"

Tail light caverns will be glowing with tail lights from various classic cars. The caverns will have great difference, "a really different feel" between day and night.

Re: D23 Live: Radiator Springs Reality

This makes me even more excited for Carsland. I never thought of them wanting a simple land that way, to get rid of the clutter of ideas DCA had in the beginning. They are right, Carsland is a meeh name but I bet if they went with Route 66 it would be another confusing land.

They wanted to add more shade into Cars Land than what was in the movie.

Sarge's will have flat-top trees, crisp front lawn, olive tree, etc. Shade trees didn't exist on the films so they photoshopped real tree specimens into concept models

Flo's is "hip and modern" with desert plant life. Took inspiration from Pm Srings

luigi's doesn't have front yard but has Italian garden for a back yard which will serve as queue.

Over 500 tree and cactus specimens considered for Cars Land

Finding the right conifer trees for radiator sprigs racers was challenge for imagineers.

Roger Gould from Pixar is talking about Cars Land animatronics now.

Cars Land set in "Cars 1.5" timeline to feature Rusteeze Lightning McQueen.

Multiple changes made for Cars Land were reflected in Cars 2. Example: Flo's got an expansion for Cars Land, because they needed space for guest seating. This change was shown in cars 2 movie.

Lasseter encouraged Imagineers go beyond the movie to create a more complete world for the theme park land. Created back story for Stanley, the founder of Radiator Springs and the original town.

They used the digital Pixar character models to create the full size sculpts of the animatronics for Cars Land

Mac was first animatronic installed in Radiator Springs Racers ride.

Disneyland Food Ops took trip to real Route 66 to get inspiration for Cars Land food.

Cone-shaped bread bowl will be used to serve "chili cone carne" at Cozy Cone food court.

John making announcement - talks about being jungle skippe r and how important it was for him.

"Today we're announcing a contest.." wants people to dig through old photos and find photos of him working at Jungle Cruise from fall 1977 thru summer of 1978. "Pixar invented digital compositing ... We know a fake when we see it"

Winner gets to come to opening of Cars Land as guest of Pixar/Lasseter

Contest entries can be submitted to johnofthejungle.com and on Jungle Cruise Facebook page.

Ugh so originally it was going to be original rides, then when Cars came out they compromised and would include Cars in the land but then lasseter forced them to make the whole land based on Cars. Thats so stupid.

                      I totally disagree.

As do I. I'm so glad John came in and focused the land. DCA did not need another jumbled, incoherent, cluttered land full of a odd melange of characters/ideas (Paradise Pier and Hollywoodland come to mind).

Re: D23 Live: Radiator Springs Reality

Hmm, I have to admit I LOVE the idea of Carsland- it sounds like a total blast!! But was it really that smart? After all, my neice who is 5 and my soon-to-be neice who is 6 doesn't know what the movie A Bug's Life is. They are two different kids with different parents and both have never even heard of the movie. I'm afraid this may eventually happen with Carsland too! Will it really be a land worthy of 56 years? Sure, Disneyland has some rides based on old movies no one remembers, but it's a bit different than basing a land on a movie. Maybe the movies won't be necessary to understand the land though, or perhaps the land will make the movies memorable because of it's amazing architecture and E-ticket ride.

Other than that, it sounds like a total blast
sigpic...After a YEAR I finally was able to figure out my password again! I'm baaack! Woohoo!(:
                          Disney is my life <3

After seeing the plans for BVS, I can tell you, that, that would not have been the case. Imagineering is different now than it was 10 years ago.

Oh I know they aren't. The Imagineers understand again it seems and have the management who is more willing to put money behind it.
