  • Remembering The King - He Died 31 Years Ago 8/16

Like last year, I just wanted to start a thread to remember Elvis Presley - a country singer really, who eventually became the renowned "King of Rock And Roll".

I was working at Disneyland in the Plaza Pavillion kitchen when the news broke on the radio. It was about 2:25PM on a Thursday afternoon as I recall.

All the cooks just dropped their knives or whatever they were doing. Same for the potwashers, the girls going back and forth from the front line, Tahitian Terrace crew members.

After about 30 seconds I started to put some food I'd prepped for that night in one of the walk-in refrigerators.

At which point one guy looked at me and said something like...The King just died, and all you can do is put your pork away.

    Oh well.

Again, favorite songs and memories of Elvis are welcome.

From Early Elvis my favorite is...I Can't Help Falling In Love, With You...

Late Elvis...one of the great songs of all time...Suspicious Minds.

I also remember that day because it was the day I arrived at Disneyland for the first time. We got to the hotel and the headlines were out

I also liked, among others, Crying in the Chapel - Elvis has some remarkable gospel collections.

Also Teddy Bear, Little Sister and Blue Suede Shoes...

In the Ghetto, Burnin' Love, The Wonder of You, and his rendition of "My Way"

        How about some of yours?

Elvis didin't die, he just went home - Tommy Lee Jones (Men In Black)

I actually liked Elvis' movies more than his music. They were so full of cheesy goodness.

A couple of them almost came dangerously close to having a discernable plot. But mostly they were staged excuses to get Elvis's songs on the silver screen.

My mom is a HUGE Elvis fan. I don't remember this but my mom does and she's told the story a dozen times at least. We were camping somewhere up north when the news came on about it. My mom got all upset and all that jazz.

Now I can totally tell you where I was and everything when I heard Brandon Lee died.
