  • Mary Travers: Goodbye To A Sweet Voice of Reason

As you probably know by now, Mary Travers (of Peter, Paul and Mary fame) passed away earlier this week.

How I loved this trio, and the kind of music they stood for - simple songs with a great deal of depth and meaning, played and sung simply before they were soon to be drowned out by technology, and multi-track rock and roll.

Thank you, Mary. And may you finally learn the answers to the questions originally posed by Bob Dylan.

And here's the song that used to make me cry, about dragons and things like the lost innocence of childhood.

And I also loved their less than subtle poking of fun at at the Mamas and the Papas, the Beatles and others that came after...

Anyway, thank you Mary. You gave so much!
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

I've never been able to listen to Puff the Magic Dragon without crying.

Okay, so it still makes me cry too.

She (Mary) and they left us with such a wonderful kind of music.

I hear "coffeehouse" music today that is somewhat reminiscent of the "folk" music form. I guess they'd be considered something of a cross between "folk" and the "beatnik" movement of the time.

I still enjoy listening to the Kingston Trio, and Pete Seeger, among others - both the "political" and "non-political".

Will we ever again have music like classic Dylan, or P, P and M?

By the way, I loved the disclaimer at the beginning of "Puff" at the start of the YouTube version above. I had never even heard of the "other" explanation til about 20 years ago.
