would you let her read it?

i ask becuase in the book Bella (the heroine) completely shuts down after edward dumps her... i mean not eating, wanting to die..ect...
and with kids mimicking everything popular now-a-days it kind of scares me.
if i had a duaghter i wouldnt let her read the twilight series until she was older or atleast have a serious talk with me about relationships. what if she "had a love like edward" but he left her for her math partner, and she thinks its okay to completely shut down... hmm what do you guys think?

I think it's a little insulting to assume that kids are going to mimic the behavior of a literary character just because the series is popular. My 15 year old daughter read the whole series and thought that Bella was a chump. I see no problem allowing kids to read these books.

i only say this hypothetically... i know girls who thougth the same thing...but then there are others who try to live in that kind of fantasy. im not trying to insult at all, it was just something i was thinking about and wanted to hear other opinions.

Granted I don't have children so I can't speak for the moms out there, but I think it would depend on the maturity of the kid reading the books. As long as they can truly see that these characters are just that, then have at it. A lot of the fan girls out there are obsessed with Robert Pattinson because they neglect to realize that he is NOT Edward, is NOT a vampire, and is NOT going to sparkle in the sunlight. He's just a guy playing a part.

I'd be more worried about subjecting the kids to Kristen Stewart's acting.

that is deffinetly true. i hope she does better the upcoming movie or i think she will ruin it for me.....

I hear about these kind of kids and it scares me. I'm so glad mine has a level head on her shoulders (for a teenager, that is!).

I actually found a lot of Bella's mannerisms, annoying as they are, to be pretty spot on. Teenage girls can be the height of dramatic, self-centered, awkward, narcissistic, vapid behavior. (Not intended to insult any teens here, I promise). I found her reaction to the breakup to be one of the most tedious things about her...but I also recall those years, when a heartbreak was bigger than anything else in the world, and nobody had ever felt the way I did, etc...I look back now and laugh, but Stephenie Meyer seemed to catch the lameness that is the teen years pretty well. :lol:

I actually thought about this today. I picked my daughter up from elementary school...and saw a young girl...probably around 9, with a Twilight backpack. I just kinda stared for a moment. Wondering what parent would let a 9 yr old read or even watch something of that content.

I think anything above.....say....12....would be okay. At that age, I was reading Stephen King. I turned out semi normal.

It depends on how old your daughter is.

Mine was 12 when she wanted to read the books. We weren't sure so I read them first and deemed that they were okay for her to read. Surprisingly, I enjoyed them too.

As with all decisions regarding children... some things just depend on the child. I know 9 year olds that I swear were born with the common sense of a 30 year old! I also know a 13 year old who still needs her mother to make her a sandwich... and no it is not that she wants to be waited on. I think she would actually starve in house alone with a fridge full of food cuz she is clueless!

I think you should relay on your judgement in deciding if that is an appropriate book for her to read. I'm sure you know her best! ;-)

I thought she was too. Her character was pathetic. My daughter liked the books, but thought Bella was weak.

Even after reading the books my daughter never shut down after a break up. She never wanted to be undead, have a hybrid baby or play one buy against another one. She understood it was a work of fiction.

She ends up marrying Edward, having a half vampire baby, becoming a vampire and basically saving her family / coven from destruction.

It's a total Mary Sue, and once you read the whole series you can tell Meyer's wrote herself as Bella... especially as a vampire. It ends up too cheekily perfect. Everyone winds up happily ever after, except Leah.
