I didn't even remember it until just a few minutes ago. The world changed in so many real ways, on this night 29 years ago. New England in the midst of what seemed to be a big game with Miami, until...

I was working on an audio project at Cal State Fullerton that Monday night, with the football game, and Howard Cosell, in the background.

In the days that followed, I worked my internship at then rock and roll KEZY Anaheim...the host of one of thousands of scenes like the one depicted here in that time.

To me, it was like the 60's officially died that night. How well I remember it. December 8, 1980.

That was one terribily memorable Monday night, week and sad memory since. We were all so lucky to have him as long as we did.

Every year the calendar rolls around to this date and I ask myself: what's special about today? Is it someone's birthday? Oh yeah...then I remember.

I attended one of those fan gatherings in Orange County somewhere, I've totally forgotten where, the front lawn of a radio station maybe?

The only place it could have been, as far as I know, would have been in front of the old KEZY 1190 studios, on Ball Road next to the Ganahl Lumber yard, about three miles or so east of Disneyland.

Small world, because it's most likely I was there too most of that day as a fan, and a KEZY intern through CS Fullerton. We had maybe hundreds of people out front, and played Beatles A-Z on the station, piped through the speakers...and when I heard All You Need Is Love, I broke down finally.

Wow...has it been that long...I am a big fan of his music and the beatles..and he was a true genius..what a shame he was taken too soon...I wasn't there when he passed away as I was only three months old..I wish I was though..RIP John Lennon

I remember Cosell's announcement well. I was only 6 at the time, but I was full aware of who John Lennon was, though I didn't get into The Beatles for another 6 years (my uncle gave me 2 of his old records when I was 12).

Lennon was a visionary. He truly changed the world in many ways. I have a John Lennon Florida license plate on my car (the Imagine artwork). No idea what he has to do with Florida (other than knowing he signed the papers to officially break up The Beatles in a Florida hotel room, reportedly the Polynesian at WDW of all places).

Really? I'd never heard that before! A very interesting tidbit of information! If I had heard it, I'd certainly forgotten. Thanks aimster!

I recommend to anyone the rental of DVDs containing Dick Cavett's series of interviews with Lennon and Yoko Ono circa 1971. He doesn't talk about the Beatles much (he was really bored with it by then) but he really opened up on a lot of other stuff.

For those that don't know, Cavett was ABC's late night alternative to some guy named Carson over at NBC...less comedy, maybe more of a 'Charlie Rose' type approach, although the show was definitely celebrity and comedy driven more than that.


I remember reading that McCartney approached Lennon not long before his death, to work together some more, and got the brushoff. My guess is, seeing what's happened with other musical acts, that this would have changed with the passage of more time

Those DVD's are readily available on Netflix. That's how I saw them. (Think I was allowed to stay up til 1AM on school nights when I was 15?)
