Totally a "nanner nanner" moment.
And not only can we not read it, we can't afford it either. $62,000??? Ouch!

Re: J.K. Finished New Book
I think that it's a very nice gesture to provide a gift to the 6 people who were responsible for helping her get Harry Potter into print, and the 7th is for her charity for kids. I think that the 7 handmade books is very nice and all, but after that was done there should be just a plain mass printing of the book from her handwritten pages so that all the fans who have stuck with her to the end could also be "rewarded" even if the books were not leather bound, jewel encrusted, etc. A plain old copy would be fine for us.Peter Pan Forever!!! Re: J.K. Finished New Book
It seems so cruel to announce a new book that we don't get to read. It's nice that a charity will benefit at least. Perhaps elements of the book will eventually make it into her Harry Potter encyclopedia?
I do think this should either have been kept private or made public. There's just so many Harry Potter fans and I think there will be a negative outcry over this, regardless of how inconsequential or even amateur the book happens to be.My Micechat cruise trip report, Part 1:http://micechat.com/14795-disney-wonder/

Re: J.K. Finished New Book
I kind of see it as a big "Screw you!" to everyone. If she wanted to make a special gift for a small group of friends then that is of course perfectly fine. But announcing it in this, "Hey, guess what really cool thing you'll all never get to see!" kind of way is just petty and arrogant.
Sadly, I have to say that it looks like Rowling has fallen into the "I really am this wonderful" trap of fame. Pity. She had seemed so likable in the past.

Re: J.K. Finished New Book
I also feel that, while these six people probably really do deserve a nice, big heartfelt "Thank you" with a special gift, she shouldn't forget about saying "Thank you" to all her fans either (i.e. the people who got her "out of the cafe" so to speak). She can't not know that everyone will want to read these fairy tales - and for this to be publicly announced is shameful on her part. On the one hand she seeks the extreme in privacy for her family (rightfully so) - but the moment that private life involves a possible publicity angle, it's not so personal anymore.
I would venture to say that she fell into the "I really am this wonderful" mindset quite some time ago. The last book made that quite clear.

If I was one of those six people I'd say, "what's this? a hand made book? Your J. freaking K. You can afford to buy each of us an African country and you give us a book? Thanks a bunch."St. Elizabeth, Patron Saint of Themed parks. Protect us from break downs, long lines, and used gum. Amen.

As far as it being scanned and posted online, I actually doubt it. She's giving it to six close friends and would know from where the scans came from, assuming that they would be the type to betray her trust in the first place. I'd also wager to say that the charity auction will come with a clause stating that the winner is bound to keep the book offline and secret or forfeit the book and money. Sadly, I doubt any of us will ever read the thing.

That's not really fair. That book was a major part of the Deathly Hallows.. so we should get to read it too. Re: J.K. Finished New Book
Guess $62000 wouldn't have been enough for it -- the book sold for just under $4,000,000!

Personally I think it is awesome that she did this.
