  • Should "Cry-Baby" Be a Musical?

    Hello,

I'm referring to the 1990 musical film staring Johnny Depp.

While watching "Cry-Baby" a couple of times on the free movie channels. I kept thinking of "HairSpray" and how that one became a cute Broadway Musical play.

I kept thinking, it would be just as cute if they thought about making a "Cry-Baby" one, also.

So, do you think it would be fun if they made a "Cry-Baby" one also?

    Thanks for stopping in.

Cry Baby would make for one highly charged musical. Good call, Haley. I love the wild plot, and the musical score is facsinating.

I thought I heard that Cry Baby was already heading to Broadway?

Oh really? I hope so. Though, I haven't heard anything myself.

Cry Baby's previews at San Diego's La Jolla Playhouse ended on December 22nd. I couldn't find any information about when it is set to open on Broadway. My guess would be in the spring.

Not surprising they did it... the movie was the follow-up to hairspray, so it just makes sense that it would be the broadway follow-up too.

Cry Baby would be a great Live Musical.

I was watching that movie last night. Johnny Depp and Amy Locane are so young in that movie.

I thought that too. Well, especially on Johnny Depp when I was thinking of it. I loved this movie since it first came out. Now, seeing it from a very longtime, all I could think is wow. Just seeing how much Johnny Depp has already changed.

i voted yes. i finally was able to see the movie a couple months ago and loved it. not as much as hairspray but still really good. yeah they did make a musical version of crybaby that was in previews in california. i don't know how it went but hopefully good enough to be on broadway. i saw the pictures and it looks promising.

Cry-Baby is already a musical of sorts, so a stage version could be interesting if done right. I'm impressed with what they did with Hairspray so keeping my fingers crossed.

The film-based musical Cry-Baby will shed its tears on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre starting March 15.

Following the La Jolla Playhouse world premiere in November 2007, the new musical based on the John Waters film about "the baddest boy in town" who falls for a good girl in 1954's Baltimore heads to Broadway.

James Snyder will star in the title role opposite Tony Award winner Harriet Harris; both created their roles at the La Jolla Playhouse. Mark Brokaw stages and Rob Ashford choreographs the work scheduled to officially open April 24 at the recent home of The Drowsy Chaperone. Adam Epstein, Allan S. Gordon, and Elan V. McAllister produce.
