Best Video Game of 2008?

So what game was your favorite new game of 2008???
For me it was Fallout 3, Its huge, no right way to go through the game, choices (real choices not like Fable 2), good story, solid soundtrack, good voice acting, and great game play.
As for GTA 4, it was a good game, a lot of work went into it but....its just not that different, I've stolen cars before, I've shot cops (in VG's), and if I want to race I'll play mario kart. It just should have not got game of the year from spike. Though I understand a lot of work went into the game...that does not make it the best game of the year.

Metal Gear Solid 4 hands down.

For all the same reasons GTA4 won, MGS4 did it better.

besides, i dont think any real gamer thinks SpikeTV knows what they're talking about when it comes to games anyway

Can't say I've played enough games to offer an informed personal opinion. I will say that I really liked GTA IV, which impresses me considering I did not like GTA III when I tried it. I'm really looking forward to Fallout 3 (it's on my shelf), and I really liked Fable 2, although I'm quite sure there are better games than Fable 2 - I just haven't played them yet.

I was surprised to see a Wii Ware game take the top honors, so I bought it. It's an amazingly clever, addictive, frustrating, fun, puzzle game. Highly recommended.

Going simply by games I can't stop playing, Left 4 Dead and Rock Band 2. Completely addicted to both.

Left 4 Dead for the PC. It's one of the most amazing and addicting game I've ever played. The Source engine itself is incredible in terms of scalability. It can run on my old $400 laptop and still look decent without major lag or framerate drops. Valve is truly a master at game development.

I always wait at least a year before I buy games, so I can't really say. I have played Spore, which I know a lot of people like, but it didn't really do much for me - and I usually like those types of games. And up until I read this thread, the one I was most looking forward to playing was GTA4. I'm surprised to see all the positive feedback for Left For Dead though. As a major fan of Resident Evil 4, it looks like it might be up my alley. I'll likely get both of those games, along with Call of Duty 4, once the price drops out of the $50 range. Until then, I'm perfectly content with the Command & Conquer complete set that I got for Christmas, and Silent Hill 3, which I haven't started yet.

As far as '09, I'm really looking forward to The Sims 3.

I love Gears 2 but I've probably had the most fun with Little Big Planet. I haven't even finished the story mode yet. I usually just play the community levels and goof around with the creation tools.
