  • Wii Storage finally addressed!

    From Kotaku and the GDC...

Hitting at the same time as Nintendo President Satoru Iwata's keynote speech at GDC, a new system update is available for the Nintendo Wi that adds an SD card menu option to the Wii menu. Clicking on the SD card icon brings up a message telling users that they can launch channels from an SD storage card by temporarily utilizing the Wii system memory. It then warns that save games should be moved to Wii system memory before launching games.
Speaking at Nintendo's keynote at GDC, Nintendo's Bill Trinnen explains that users can now download directly from the Wii Shop Channel to an SD card, launching the games directly from the card. The SD card menu features 20 screens of 12 channels a piece, meaning with the right sized card you can expect to stroe up to 240 games. As of update 4.0, SD cards of up to 32GB are now supported.
It certainly looks like this is the answer to Wii owners' storage woes. What are you waiting for? Run to your Wii and give it a try!

I can't open the link at work, but does this mean that SDHC cards are now accepted? And how do I get my stuff from my 2.0gb card to a larger card???

it supports up to 32gb cards now.

can you transfer from your 2gb, to your desktop and then back onto a 32gb?

Not sure ... the only things I have on my 2gb card is my Rock Band downloads so I can probably just re-download everything.

So since only SDHC cards go beyond 2GB, I'm going to assume that the Wii does indeed support SDHC cards now.

        (off to price 32gb cards)

I'd still like to know why they won't just give us the ability to put an external HD into the extra USB port.

Yea its gotta be SDHC, they're the only types that go up that far.

But this is awesome news! Thanks for posting it! (justjohn)

I didn't get a message from Nintendo, but ran a systems update and the new menu was there. Looks pretty easy to navigate, etc.

I think I'll just put in the 4GB SDHC card I have for now. I'll let you all know how it works when I do it later tonight. I really don't think I'll need more than 4GB for the Wii right now.

                Can any SD card work?
or does it have to be a SD card and not a SD card for anything else

because mine says SD Memory Card 2.0GB

Try it and see. I would think any SD card would work now because of this update, but not sure.

Potential problem with the new SD card set up ...

I got my Virtual Console games moved to a 4GB SDHC card with absolutely no problem. Go into Rock Band 2 in order to start moving over my downloaded songs to the new card, and the card is not compatable with RB2.

Going to check the RB boards to see if this has been addressed.

EDIT: Checked the RB boards, and people are having the same issue. Still no word from Harmonix or Nintendo regarding the compatability of SDHC cards with Rock Band. I'm assuming Guitar Hero World Tour would be having the same issue.

                    What a crock.

No problems with the update so far, other than the ones mentioned above with Rockband. All of my games were re-downloaded to the card and run from it with no issues, and I used an 8 gig SDHC in mine.

Has there been a Wii game worth purchasing in the last year? I'll download this update when I ... ummmm.... turn on my Wii.
