  • GameCube Questions

Hey! We're thinking of buying a GameCube system (or bundle?) for Christmas for our three daughters, ages 11, 8, and 5.

I've checked the Nintendo website and read some reviews on Amazon, but I could really use some help from people who actually own one.

Do you need a specific memory card to store games/scores, or any old memory card? I have a 256 flash card sitting in its packaging still, would love for it to work with GameCube.

Also, we have three SPs, if you buy the accesory cords, can you play a Gameboy game on the Cube? Or just Cube games with the connector cords?

Any incredible bundles out there I should know about? I'm console stupid. I've never been interested in one since high school and that was a looooong time ago.

I'm not interested in anything but GameCube....so don't try to sell me on anything else. We're casual gamers, definitely casual, and we already have so much Nintendo stuff that I'm not switching brands.

Hey! Glad to hear you're grabbing a Gamecube. I love mine.

You actually need a specific memory card. Not any flash card will do. There are three versions that you can use, the Memory Card 59, the Memory card 251, or the Memory card 1019 (#'s equal blocks). The 59 isn't even worth it. The 251 is great, so you could go with that. But the 1019 is a measly 3 dollars more on Amazon, so if you don't mind the extra bucks, I recommend that. (Amazon links: 251, 1019)

And no you can't play GB games on the 'cube. They used to have an accessory called the GB player (Amazon link), but it's discontinued. It works with GameBoy games and GameBoy Advance games, but not DS games. The connector cables only work on specific 'cube games with "Gamecube/GB" connectivity features. It's only on a few games, and they're not worth it.

As for bundles, it's not easy to find one around this time. The next gen systems are about to be released (I'd recommend a Wii even though I know you said not to push anything on you, but it's good because it plays next-gen games AND Gamecube games! AND it has a feature that lets you download old classics from NES, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, and other systems) Just in case you want a look see... (wii link)

Oh, and one last thing. You definitely need to get Super Smash Bros. Melee. It's the best selling game for the system.

Good luck with your game shopping!

      Re: GameCube Questions

Hold on for the Wii if you can. It's built for the ground up for casual gamers (GameCube is a strange middle-ground between N64 and PS2 with almost no games from companies that are non Nintendo) it will be backwards compatable with GameCube games so any games for the Cube you want to play will also work.

GBA/GBAsp has been succeeded by Nintendo DS / DS Lite, which is probably their best platform since the Super Nintendo back in the 90s. DS can play your old GBA/sp games (not with multiplayer, though, but DS has a great amount of multplayer games and it's wireless so everyone doesn't have to play next to each other.) If you don't have at least one, boy are you missing out!

In fact, honestly, going from GBA to DS Lite, though expensive, would probably be a better move than getting a Cube or a Wii unless you really want to play around the TV. If your family is used to handhelds, it may be tough to go from everyone having their own little game machine to everyone having to share one and share the TV it's hooked up to!

I would advise aganist the Wii. It is motion sensing yes but playing games mean moving your controllers all about. Imagine 3 sitting on a couch when there all moving and suddenly WHACK one of them hits someone else by accident and a fight starts. Do not get ti at launch until we see what exactly this console along with the PS3 can do
        However Gamecubes should be cheap!
EDIT: Yes the DS and DSLite are pretty cool, 130 bucks each for the Lite though Phats are cheaper if you want to try and get one for each of your kids. Sharring can be easy I guess but between 3 people is pretty hard and if you really have to get a Wii since it does support up to 4 controllers. Keep in mnd you will have to buy a load of accessories to get the most out of it.

Ugh, I'm no longer interested in handhelds. We have a lot of "dead soldiers" laying around here. I think we have 3 Gameboy Colors, one Advance and then the three SPs that actually get used.

We want a console, but we're not at all gamers of any sort. I limit the kids TV and video game time so completely that the console would be used only a few hours a week at the most. They're just dying for a console, and they want to play multi-player games.

I'm really only interested in GameCube info, thanks!! Might look into buying a Gameboy player on eBay! Thank you for the info! Get the most out of the system.

I have a Gamecube Stink (came free when I bought my car). I'm like you. Very casual gamer. I don't know that I can answer your technical questions really. All I do is plug in a game and play. No frills. I always have fun with my Gamecube games though. Most of the stuff I have for it is probably meant for children, but I'm simple like that. I'm playing to have fun and relax, not stress out over some difficult game that I can't figure out. There are a lot of the multiplayer games featuring popular characters for the GB, so I could see you and the kids having a lot of fun with it.

I know last year they had a GC bundle for $99 which included 2 controllers and Mario Party 7. Not sure if they will be doing the same thing this year. We got it since we were going to get Mario Party and it's always nice to have a 2nd system.

as a hardcore gamer, i have to say DO NOT BUY THE GAMECUBE. Its life has ended and no games will be made for it anymore. I suggest that you get a wii, or if you willing to spend a little exra money, the xbox 360

You cannot call your self a hardcore gamer if you plan on only getting a Wii lol. If you plan on getting a 360 and a Wii or just a PS3 than sure your a hardcore gamer. But no one ever made any cash off of playing Zelda, Mario or Metriod they are never in real tournaments. I'm sorry but I saw the Wii in action for a couple mini games and it sucked! Someone had to run so he was waving his harms looked really dumb and after 15 seconds he said I'm TIRED!

Perhaps who should pay a little closer attention to what the Op had to say. She IS NOT a hardcore gamer. She has no desire to become a hardcore gamer. She just wants something fun to do with her family. She also requested that people NOT TRY TO SELL HER ON A DIFFERENT SYSTEM. She only had questions about the GC before making her purchase.

Thanks! I found that on Amazon, but it's $139ish right now. I'm considering that one....if the price goes down.

Thank you to everyone who's answering my questions, everytime we buy any kind of electronic anything, I feel like an idiot.

My husband bought an xbox 2 years ago for my kids. We ended up shelving it and getting a Gamecube because of all the nintendo games. But, now, we wish we would have bought a playstation - it has more kids games and they're cheaper. But, we do love the Mario.

If you have an HDTV or plan on getting one I would try and get the 480P versions. Some old Gamecubes support HD in 480P and it probably looks cooler. However Nintendo stopped this when they heard that less than 1% of GB users actually used this so they could cut down on costs. So some have 480P most don't.

okm, your a hard core gamer, big deal. most of the kids today do not need to be " hard core" and spend there lives sitting in front of the box. a game cube is awsome, and you can get any game you want and there are a ton of them. we have every game machine here and my kids prefer the game cube. Stinkerbell you can get the game bundles around christmas time, and you get 2 controllers and a game. its worth it and the kids love the games. go for it and do not buy the " you need this or that " crap. this is a good unit, my kids adore it and so worth the money.

Stink, Ky and Shawn have a gamecube and they both love. I would wait a little longer to purchase to see if any bundles come out. Also, you can get a lot of decent games at EB Games and the like, used games for a great price.

Thanks guys! It would definitely be for the kids and only casually played, although my husband and I both love Mario games. My eight year old is dying for some kind of console and I feel lucky that we've been able to get away without one for this long.

I think I'll wait to find a great bundle....thanks for the tips!!

That's why I even thought of the GameCube at all. Trying not to buy any more Legos or Polly Pockets or Barbies....thought we'd plop a little bit of money toward a console that doesn't have a billion little pieces. When I walked by the Lego Star Wars 2 GameCube game at Target the other day, I started thinking about it seriously.
