  • Simple $15 device to speed up VMK....

Hi all, I just purchased a Hawking Technology BroadBand Booster and I can see a marked improvement in VMK play especially in HM and Pirates games. Newegg.com is offering it for 25$ with a 10$ rebate right now so for a small amount of money and in under 10 min of setup time I'm getting a much better experience from VMK. (at least a lot less lag... the annoying people are still there nothing can save us from that! )

What is is: Its a small network device that sits between your cable modem/ADSL modem and your computer/cable router, that uses a combination of techniques to improve performance up to 400% according to their website: http://www.hawkingtech.com/products/...=80&ProdID=216

I did have to upgrade the firmware, not a big deal just follow the directions, and it works for me. I do not own stock in them or newegg but a friend turned me on to it and I thought I would pass along the favor to my fellow MiceChatters! If your are in a congested broadband network like I am (comcast) it seems to make a big difference.

Here's a review of the product. I'm not sure it's a benefit at all.

I saw that one too, I think the issue there is they tested in a lab without a lot of extraneous traffic. Most of us on Cable Modems and DSL are essentially on a shared network competing for bandwidth with our neighbors. I for one have seen a noticeable improvement in web surfing, improvement in my VOIP quality, and improved file transfer times... Basically its a QOS device if you purchase a high end cable router with a good QOS engine on board you'll probably see the same results once you configure it properly. I have multiple PC's and 2 VOIP lines sharing the cable line in a congested area it made a huge difference for me. I'm seeing an average of 263Mbps upload improvement and a 3209 Mbps download speed improvement in my connection per speakeasy's speed test tool.

Of course your mileage may vary...

usually these devices do two things

              - try to prioritize traffic based on inspection (which will only affect traffic going through the device.. its not going to do anything relative to you vs your neighbors, etc)
              - try to make connections more efficient by modifying TCP parameters like window size, etc

Its not really QoS as much as just traffic shaping.

If you do a lot of mixed traffic from your network - these can help a bit. But for most, any gains are marginal. Its not going to help you in anyway about your shared IP network though. It can't prioritize your traffic upstream of your internal lan.

VMK was a good memory, won't be forgotten. But just because a games gone does not mean I am
