  • PS3 Price Cut provides immediate boost in Sales (2x) - Turn around or is it a blip?

Sony is claiming they doubled the sales of their PS3 unit after the recent price cuts and new model introduction. Selling 75,000 units in the US in a single week.

Maybe price WAS the barrier like so many have been saying much to the denial of Sony.

Do you guys think Sony can maintain this new sales clip? Unfortunately it still lags very far behind the other consoles... but a big jump like this does show there is INTEREST in the console..

Its not noted in the article, but I'm sure many of you have also seen at the same time Sony launched a new TV ad campaign for the PS3 as well.

I think if Sony can get competitively priced and come out with a one-two punch with 2-3 games (like GTA plus something) they could turn it around.

They really need to strong arm their developers into stop producing 'like' titles on the PS2 though. Sony has a customer base like no other in the PS2 world... yet has failed to capitalize on getting those customers to upgrade to the PS3.

Sony PS3 weekly U.S. sales double after price cut

Fri Nov 16, 12:57 AM ET

TOKYO (Reuters) - U.S. sales of Sony Corp's PlayStation 3 (PS3) more than doubled in the weeks following a price cut and the launch of a lower-priced version, the company said on Friday, in a sign of changing fortunes for the game console.

Sony said it sold about 75,000 PS3 consoles in the week of October 29 in the United States, and more than 100,000 in the following week, compared with weekly sales of 30,000 to 40,000 before.

Sony cut the U.S. price of its PS3 with an 80-gigabyte hard disk drive by 17 percent to $499 in mid-October. It started selling a new model with a 40-GB hard drive on November 2 for $399 in an effort to ignite demand ahead of the crucial holiday season.

Sony, locked in battle with Microsoft Corp and Nintendo Co Ltd in the global videogame market, suffered a slow start for the PS3 after its launch a year ago because of high prices and a scarcity of strong game titles.

Nintendo sold 519,000 units of the Wii in the United States in October, while Microsoft sold 366,000 Xbox 360 consoles and Sony sold 121,000 of its PS3 machines, data from market research firm NPD showed on Thursday.

I think the price-cut and the release of Ratatouille on Blu-Ray have more to do with it than anything.
