  • Sony to stop selling 20gig and 60gig PS3 models in Japan

Say good-bye to PS2 backwards compatibility for good... must have been some good cost savings in the reworking that ended up being the 40gig model.

Is the PS3's drive expandable at all? That's going to be the issue.. all this HD content.. these little drives are going to fill up fast if the online media stuff continues to grow.

Sony Stops Selling 20, 60 GB PS3s in Japan

Sony has announced it will stop shipments of 20 and 60 GB PlayStation 3 consoles in Japan, leaving the 40 GB alone in the market. Can the rest of the world be far behind?

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced (Japanese) it will stop shipments of 20 and 60 GB PlayStation 3 video game consoles in Japan this month, leaving the 40 GB alone in the market place. Historically, Sony tends to roll out changes to its PlayStation lineup in its home soil of Japan before the rest of the world, leading to speculate 20 and 60 GB PlayStations aren't long for the U.S., European, and Asian markets either. However, Sony also announced it intends to launch new PS3 models in the future.

Translated, Sony's statement on the transition reads in part: "Sony will vigorously promote the expansion of the PS3 platform by further concentrating on the 40GB HDD (CECHH00 Series) model introduced in November 2007, equipped with the core technology components that make PS3 the most advanced high-definition entertainment system while realizing lower power consumption."

Sony is hoping 2008 will be the year the PS3 comes to dominate console sales, and is promising a series of high-profile titles exclusive to the platform, including Metal Gear Solid 4. According to Sony, the company sold 1.2 million PS3 consoles over the 2007 end-of-year holiday season, along with 1.3 million PS2s and 1.4 million PSPs. "The strong PS3 sales also further establish Blu-ray's dominant position as the high-definition medium of choice for games and movies," said Sony president and CEO Jack Tretton, in a statement. "Consumers are clearly responding to the expanding multimedia capabilities and a great line-up of over 200 games."

So, they take away what PlayStation users like most about being loyal to Sony (the continued ability to play our old games) and somehow expect to increase sales?

I love me some PlayStation, but this crap is pushing me ever closer to defecting to XBox.

So I'm absolutely confused on what console's Sony is actually selling. I wish they'd just settle on a set so I could better make a decision to purchase one...

Still less than the 6 SKUs* the 360 has had vs. the 4 SKUs the PS3 has had.

*Pro without HDMI slot is a different SKU than the Pro with the HDMI slot.

MS didn't have all of these sku's in their first year of release.

Either way, with Sony making a new version and taking away a version every three months or so its no wonder no one is buying one. If Sony can't make up their minds how do they expect consumers to?

When they got rid of the 80 and 60 models in America (and reduced the price) it did lead to more sales. And they need more sales in Japan where gamers are turning to portable consoles and cell phones for a lot of their gaming right now.

Again, when they put the new models on sale here, sales went up. I don't think a lot of consumers worry about the model necessarily, they go by the price. And the new price point of the 40g model did spur sales.

(Note: I don't like the elimination of backwards compatibility, but it's worked for Sony. And they don't have a lot of competition in the backwards compatibility market. The 360's doesn't do it very well, and PS2s are going to be available and plentiful, both new and used, for a long time.)

Change that to "when they dropped the price".

They dropped the price when they put out the new models. I don't think you can separate the two. They couldn't reduce the price until they reduced the cost. They did that by taking out the EE.

Well.. they dropped the price... to liquidate the model they were dropping.. and didn't tell anyone. Then came out with the new models at the new price.

Certainly the cost savings is more then by just dropping the EE - I'd be interested if people have compared the PCBs. Cost savings through the life of manufacturing and revisions is of course entirely normal.

again, change that to they brought out the new models as a way to reduce prices. The PS3 didn't sell at $600 no matter what they thought it was worth so they dropped to $500 saw a bump. then brought out the $400 PS3 and saw another bump.

                              I'm glad I got the 60gb when I did.

The 80gb model does have software emulation for PS2 games, but it's just not as good as having the hardware to emulate.

20gb model -- that's been discontinued for a long time in the US, hasn't it?

Another thing they've quietly discontinued in newer models: SACD support. I'm sure most people don't care -- it was a rather failed format and DVD audio was more accessible, anyway.

I wonder, though -- they've released a patch so that we can play PS1 games on the PS3. The 80gb has software emulation for PS2. So can't they just release a patch so that we can play PS2 games on all models?
