      i voted no;
      because i think its a form of performing arts.

      like drama, choir, art, and dance..

        ^^ I agree with Larry. It is a performing art.

          Re: Is Dance a Sport?

          I say it depends, mostly on the type of dance.

          If you dance as a hobby for fun, but not very strenuously, then I wouldn't consider it a sport.
          But if you dance as a very serious hobby/career, I definitely think dancing could be called a sport.
          Overall, I think there's a difference between dancing for fun (turning on some music and trying out some dance moves) and really being serious about dance (performing, competing, or dancing very often).

            Doesn't really matter what you want to call something..it doesn't change it at all..if you want to call it a sport, go for it.

              Well here's my opinion;
              Dance is a sport because its 50% of Gymnastics, which is a sport.

                Dance is a sport and a fine/performance art. It requires athletic and aesthetic skill.

                  Re: Is Dance a Sport?

                  It's a moot point, but i voted no because it is a performing art, that yes, requires physical stamina and abilities. But this really is not a fact yes or no, it's an opinion. I also do not believe aesthetics is an ability nor a skill.

                    Re: Is Dance a Sport?

                    Irish step dancing is a sport. So I consider myself an athlete, yes.
                    As far as the types of dancing like ballet/tap/jazz/contemporary/hip-hop/etc., I agree, those are performing arts. One of the differences is that all of those types have recitals, but I have competitions.
                    Sport or not, dancing should not be degraded. It's so much harder than it looks, and it requires just as much hard work, skill and stamina as any other sport does.

                      Here is the definition of a sport;;

                      an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

                          Re: Is Dance a Sport?

                          I did several types of dancing (clogging, jazz, tap, modern, etc.) and competed in them - so, by the definition given - it would qualify as a sport!

                            Wow, clogging! I've always wanted to try that. I've done ballet/tap, jazz, and hip-hop all at different times, and the only one I do now is Irish step.

                              I started learning Irish soft shoe in college - I wish I had continued, it's such a good workout.
