  • Walter Cronkite, dead at age 92

Former CBS anchor 'Uncle Walter' Cronkite dead at 92 - CNN.com

So sad. I'm too young to remember him, but I still realize the impact he had on the news industry.

    RIP.

I'm at home with my 80 year old parents and my 10 year old son. I noticed this thread and told them. My parents said, "That's so sad.". My son said, "Who's that?"

He will definitely be missed. They do not make newscasters like that anymore.

I'm not too young. As we were discussing in the Apollo 11 thread just today, he was the man you tuned to, on CBS, back in the day when the the television universe was a lot smaller than it is now.

I remember him from JFK and the single most expressive move of a pair of reading glasses EVER on camera...through all the tumult and other assassinations of the 60's, to the "go baby" on the launch of Apollo 11...he was once voted the "most trusted man in America"...anchored more than a dozen political conventions and elections...a true American icon, one of Edward R. Murrow's boys...

And that's the way it is, Friday, July 17, 2009.
Walter Cronkite, thanks for years of news...
        Good night.

        And RIP.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

That is the first image that came to mind. I'm just this side of too young to remember that day (I was 5), but it certainly was a part of history.

            RIP Mr. Cronkite.

How fitting that he should die on the day of the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 launch.

Here's a link to the CBS News tribute on its website.

And I'm sorry, she is quite good at some of the things she does, but Katie Couric is not fit to run Walter's teleprompter, so to speak.

And I truly mean no disrespect to her in saying that.

Don Hewitt (60 Minutes fame) said on the Larry King show tonight that he was not disappointed at the forced retirement from the evening news, but deeply disappointed that he would no longer be used for the major events.

Have you noticed that CBS News, once the gold standard, has, umm, gone straight downhill ever since?

CBS has announced a special Cronkite retrospective to air in the normal 60 Minutes time slot on Sunday evening (7PM, 6 Central). My DVR is set, that's for sure.

Walter Cronkite wasn't a newscaster, or a personality...he was an honest-to-goodness reporter. A trained journalist who honed his craft during wartime and never lost his integrity or his ability to differentiate between news and entertainment.

                    Goodnight, Walter.

Didn't see him on the news, but I do know the impact and respect he garnered from the industry and the viewers.

He will always be remembered by me as the narrator of Spaceship Earth in EPCOT. first one I heard, and the one I heard the most.

My thoughts are with his family.

                        Very sad news.
Cronkite was a very important figure as a broadcasting journalist.
