  • Rich Ross resigns from Disney

Rich Ross has resigned his position as Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, he was appointed to it in October of 2009. His bumpy tenure included the hiring of a non-film savvy marketing head who later left the position after a short stint and a $200 million write-down from 'John Carter'. The latter reportedly drew complaints and created friction with Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter.

    Ross' resignation letter:

For the last 15 years, I have had the opportunity to work with incredibly talented people on behalf of the world’s best loved brand. During that time, we’ve told some amazing stories around the world, created successful TV programming, movies and franchises that generated new opportunities for the company in the process.

I’ve always said our success is created and driven by our people -- whom I consider to be the absolute best in the business. But, the best people need to be in the right jobs, in roles they are passionate about, doing work that leverages the full range of their abilities. It’s one of the leadership lessons I’ve learned during my career, and it’s something I’ve been giving a great deal of thought to as I look at the challenges and opportunities ahead.

I believe in this extraordinary Walt Disney Studios team, and I believe in our strong slate of films and our ability to make and market them better than anyone else. But, I no longer believe the Chairman role is the right professional fit for me. For that reason, I have made the very difficult decision to step down as Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, effective today.

It has been my honor to work with such incredible teams -- at Disney Channels Worldwide and The Walt Disney Studios and the many other Disney businesses I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with. I know I leave the Studios in good hands and, even on separate paths, I am confident we are all destined for continued success.

    -Rich

Re: Rich Ross resigns from Disney

A pair of Johns did him in - John Lasseter and John Carter.

Rich wasn't well loved in the company, though he had a friend in Bob Iger who protected him for quite some time.

Clearly, the marketing side was the weak link for Rich. He famously shook up Disney Pictures Marketing, replacing a mostly successful team with folks from outside the industry (who later had to be pushed out). And with big budget films like the ones at Disney, marketing is key.

Recently, John Lasseter had become increasingly vocal about the Rich Ross problem and with the total failure of John Carter (relative to its cost) the question was not if Rich Ross would go, but when.

Many in the company today are wondering why this took so long.

I take it John Carter's the main culprit?

Seems like it was a very troubled 2 year run that didn't make a lot of directors/actors/other people happy along the way..

Anyone who has ever worked a large corporation knows that when (not if) you resign contractually you receive more, sooner. And it appears it was your idea.

Will be interesting to see who his replacement is, and if the pictures side will go back to "Walt Disney Pictures" as it should be.

Enough with the lame "Disney" moniker for everything.

So true. Plus, you can negotiate things like positive comments about you which will help in finding another job. In this case, Iger is saying all sorts of wonderful things about Rich.

It's really the most elegant way out. And no one in any creative position stays forever. They use you up and then throw you out. That's the way the industry works.

Heh reminds me of high ups that leave my company.. They always leave willingly I actually really like John carter but with all the money it cost to make I could see it as a failure by the company standards.

Ever since his presentation at the Expo, I knew this guy was all talk. He just didn't have the right mind set for this company.

                      Re: Rich Ross steps down

I see John Carter as a big culprit and how it was handled. The public statement of what a loss it was isn't good publicity and makes the entire company look bad.

                            Re: Rich Ross steps down

The writing is on the wall after a stunning track record of box office bombs... His time ran out. Ross kept cutting costs in marketing and threw money blindly at producers expecting the "Brand" strength to bring people in. Film studios just doesn't work like that.

I doubt the Disney/Walt Disney Pictures has anything to with him, but I could be wrong. Because this is film, don't expect quality change to be soon, but gradually.
