  • Redesign of Disney Princesses

Wasn't sure where to post this but I went to my local Disney Store today only to notice that they have redesigned some of the Disney Princesses on some merchandise. There's a new Belle with longer hair, a new and very different looking Cinderella as well as Snow White. For the most part the other Princesses look the same but I couldn't help but wonder why?? While at first I thought they were prettier I started thinking they looked "sluttier"?!

Anybody know what I'm talking about or why? Sorry I don't have any pics.

Because every few years they put something out with a "different look" for the princessees. It keeps merchandise from becoming stagnant, and gets the kids wanting the "new" Belle/Snow White/ whoever toy because it's new and different. THey always go back to the classic designs though.

I hope so because after all was said and done my whole family agreed the originals are better.

They just came in within the last two-three weeks. I want to say they redo them at least once a year as my store opened in August and we opened with the other dolls. I've also noticed that when we do movie releases, dolls for that product are guranteed to be updated as well.

Just saw these this evening at the Disney Store. I've seen stylized princesses in the past and been fine with it, but it looked like they were trying to make the Princesses a little bit too much like Barbie and a little too grown up (I know that sounds weird). I won't be buying any of this new stylized princess gear for my little girl.

Here's the redesigns from the past 3 years, if you're interested.

It wasn't the dolls per say that bothered us. It was more the drawn redesign we didn't like. They have all new shirts, backpacks, nightgowns with the "newer, more mature" looking princesses.:thumbdown

Cinderella's hair is different, her face looks different too, Belle's hair is longer. Ariel's and Snow White's faces also looked tweaked.

I was at the Disney Consumer Products office last year and one of the major products they were working on was a Disney Princess creative overhaul. They had brought in a french designer and he was able to create art that focused on modern fashion and makeup. The new art would be featured on different products, not just dolls. From what I remember, a lot of their makeup was enhanced, hair was longer and more styled, and glitter, glitter, glitter.

I guess this might be the completion of that project.

Does anyone remember the really sci-fi-looking redesign of the Disney heroes and male Disney villains? I'm thinking it was around the early 2000's when this all began...I remember a really cool Captain Hook action figure in an all-black box with silver lettering that had this really futuristic steam punk claw for a hook and a really warrior-like Gaston. I might be the only one who remembers them but for some reason the very title of this thread has made me remember them.

O trust me, there's LOTS of glitter! To me all the princesses looked "stunned" for some reason. And the majority are looking off to the side. But they're selling so something is being done right.

The Flickr album with the comparisons is interesting. I like the 2010 versions for most of them, although Ariel's hair was kind of a wreck that year so I vote for 2011 for her as well as Pocahontas. Belle's 2011 straight hair looks so... off. The only 2012 version that I prefer out of the three years is Jasmine.

Funny... I never thought I'd spend so much time looking at year to year comparisons of dolls!
