[Question] Do you think Disney is the last outwardly wholesome institution out there?

Alright, I know behind closed doors Disney - the company - isn't always 100% ethical. But in a world where Miley Cyrus has made a transformation from children's idol to..............well, whatever she's doing now there is a declining amount of things we can "trust" our kids to be around. Do you consider Disney to be that company that we can still trust with our kids?

I look at the theme parks and what is the worst thing that a child would see in there? Mr. Toad going to hell? I saw that when I was young and it didn't bother me, I knew it was only animation. However when it comes to movies, tv shows and theme parks there is practically nothing out there that our kids wouldn't be able to see. It is still wholesome on the outside.

Is this accurate in your minds or has Disney taken a moral decline in your lifetime?

I feel they are still a trustworthy source for clean, family entertainment. We have discussed that a lot as our kids are tweens now. We can still count on Disney to give us fun but wholesome fun. Even in radio - my daughter prefers to listen to Disney Radio on XM. They take only allow certain songs and they block out any bad words. I am grateful to Disney to maintaining this standard.

Disney is hardly the last provider of children's entertainment that parents can "trust," but it is certainly the biggest and most well known.

For those parents who are comfortable letting the world's largest media marketing corporation babysit their children, the "wholesome" aspect of Disney's product is guaranteed by its internal corps of PC-policing lawyers and marketers, who vigilantly insure that ravaging pirates and cigarette-smoking cowboys are never seen by youthful eyes.

The social and cultural values and intense consumerism that Disney products and Parks pump into young minds, however, are something else again -- which some parents are uncomfortable with and which they choose to monitor carefully.

Disney most certainly isn't the only wholesome company out there, but I believe it is one of the most trusted. It also has the benefit of being into more forms of entertainment. Tweens and kids have Disney Radio, where parents can feel safe that their kids won't accidentally hear something they shouldn't. TV and Movies are guaranteed to be good for the entire family, and unlike some kids movies, Disney movies don't often have the "inappropriate jokes that are funny to parents but kids are clueless." content. Disney puts on touring concerts, Disney on Ice and other entertainment that are pretty much a "Sure thing" to the protective parents out there.

The cynical part of me says that they are only wholesome because that is what makes them the most money, but I know that is not true. Disney has thousands of upper level managers and executives and some of them are probably purely interested in profit and would turn the theme parks into casinos or strip clubs if that would make them more money, but I personally did meet some upper level managers who genuinely love Disney and all that it represents. Based on the kinds of things they've done recently (new cruise ships, Aulani, new DVC resorts at WDW, DCA 2) it seems like overall they're doing a fair to good job of balancing the need for not just more profits but increasing profits (as required by the owners of Disney -- the shareholders and their representatives on the Board of Directors) while still trying to put out a family friendly product. I'm sure there are other wholesome brands out there but Disney is probably the most well-known.

I fail to see the relevancy between Miley Cyrus and your question. Are you implying that she is currently endorsed by Disney? Or that Disney dictates her current actions? That is like saying that the Chicago Bulls is responsible for Dennis Rodman's behavior. People's choices are that of there own.

If the question is if Disney has taken a moral decline, then you need to define your question further to receive an appropriate response. We live in a day and age where appropriate moral standards are different than when I was born. I cannot compare the two eras. Disney is much more accepting of the gay community today than they have been in the past. Does this make them more moral? In past standards the answer was no. The question is not defined in a manner that warrants a simple manner. As society develops, our moral standards change.

No, the Miley comment was not a shot at Disney at all, it was a shot at Miley. In other words, she is now a slave of the music industry who rely on sex and gimmicks rather than the actual SOUND and writing and words of the music for entertainment. Miley is just in the news recently because of what can only be described as a trash performance at the MTV awards, which is why I used her as an example.

What I was looking for more was things like foul language, sex, violence done in a malicious way (not the cartoonish way we all grew up seeing). Those kinds of morals. Over time, not much has changed when it comes to that. If you watch Snow White or Bambi, and compare it to, say, Cars, I don't think much has changed that way in the form of cleanliness. That's what I mean.

According to merriam webster, the meaning of " wholesome", Oregon Indian casinos are outwardly wholesome:
1. good for health,= many senior citizens venture into casinos for contact, conversation, community with people. Casinos offer good food for little money. 8.00 buys a salad bar buffet. Non- smoking sections are well marked, hard to walk into a smoking section in a casino. They are at a steady temperature and offer free beverages. Casino personnel will hold your spot while you use the bathroom, stretch, eat.


2. Morally = Casino money stays in the community, county, state. Can you say that about walmart, sears or Disney? Alcohol is strictly controlled and taxes are registered with the IRS. The only moral wrong is that the larger Oregon metro Indian casinos cater to children with "fun centers" that are open very late, not good!!!


3. there is no bad behavior in Oregon Indian Casinos. they are safes place with security every 20 sq feet, working staff and all those cameras. Everyone is polite, everyone waits in long lines, everyone waits for their free stuff, no rushing the free soda bar, bathrooms are clean, all directions are followed and.....no city hall to hear why you didn't receive your money's worth. BECAUSE.....IF YOU BEHAVE BADLY.......YOU're OUT OF THERE!!!!!

Generally, I'd say yes it is wholesome. Not too sure about some of the people I've seen walking about Disneyland lately. I've come across too many swearers, yellers, complainers, etc, who really don't seem like they are having anything close to a good time. If a person really really really doesn't want to go to Disneyland, then be truthful and say so and stay home.
