  • The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey (MiceChat Reviews)

I am a big fan of the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit books. I also think that the Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the most ambitious(and greatest) trilogies of all time. Now the Hobbit is getting a trilogy. I am a tad worried about it becoming a trilogy. There were three books in the LOTR trilogy, so naturally they would make three films. The Hobbit is a 270 page book that can be read in a day. Now I understand that they want to show us where Gandalf goes when he leaves the group, and expand on the mythology some more. I have full faith in Peter Jackson. I just don't want the Hobbit to be this decades Phantom Menace.

I'm excited for it because I loved reading that book as a kid. I'm more excited for the Superman trailer that is supposed to precede it.

According to TOR.net The Hobbit will be rated PG-13. I wouldn't have expected anything less.

Some early reviews. Some positive, some not so much. Movie is currently 71% on RT.

Most interesting is the discussion on the 48fps. This may be an issue. I personally have no interest in seeing it in 48fps or in 3D.

I really think distributors are going to push back on the 48fps.

So will it be the end of the Hobbit Part Three when we get to the end of "The Hobbit" novel or does that happen in Part Two? I'll just assume it's not in Part One.

I heard about this on the news this morning to. And unfortuantly, that is why I might pass with seeing it in the theatre. I get VERY motion sick with things like this. It's hard for me to go on Star Tours sometimes because of the movements. But the theater won't be moving. So I could take the chance....

Of course, I don't know that the motion is the problem but more the fact that it looks very real. Some even said it felt like they were watching a LIVE show...bizarre.

It's certainly not part One. If I had to guess would end with the final journey to the Lonely Mountain after they leave Lake Town.

I certainly think there is enough for 2 movies if they are going to show what Gandalf was up to while not with the company, I mean who wouldn't want to see him and Saruman taking on the Necromancer? I just don't know if there is enough for 3 movies.

Clara, from what I'm hearing only 10-15% of showings will have the 48fps and those will only be the 3D presentations from what I understand. So if you see it in Non-3D (which I will be) you'll be fine.

Ah I see ok thanks so much! I did want to see this in the theatres because the last one I saw..I was 8 months pregnant and sitting in that theatre for the 3 hours was torture! Even bringing my own pillow didn't help. But I had to see it!

I can't believe that the reviewers only problem is the crappy 48 frames per second deal. I'm sure my little theater will show it in 24 frames per second.

Here's a list of theaters and what format they are showing the movie in.

UPDATED: theatres showing The Hobbit in HFR 3D, IMAX 3D, IMAX, Dolby Atmos | Hobbit Movie News and Rumors | TheOneRing.net?

If you'd just like the .pdf you can get that here.

I don't think it's all theaters because our local theater is not listed. It appears that if your theater isn't listed, they are showing it in the 48fps.

My theatre isn't listed...I may have to either drive to another city or just pass all together.

Sounds like I might be the exception, but the ONLY reason I'm planning on seeing The Hobbit sooner rather than later is for the 48fps.

Who all is planning on going to a midnight show Thursday? I'm taking my kids (14/16) and it's my sons first midnight show. My daughter and I did the last few Potter midnight shows.

To those worried about the 48fps, remember, Star Tours is shot in 60fps and Peter Jackson listed that ride as one of his inspirations for filming The Hobbit at the high frame rate. The human eye actually sees at about 60fps, so for decades we've been watching movies at nearly 1/3 our actual ability to see. We've just become accustomed to the jittery, jumpy, kind of blurred motion of motion pictures. So yes, 48fps at 5k resolution (5 times your HD tv), is going to be a bit jarring to some, but what it offers is a window into a real feeling world. My worry, and it sounds like there is some basis for it, is that at such high levels of detail, the special effects can become a little apparent again as well as differences in lighting between indoor sets for outdoors and actual shots in the world. This will just force them to get better at effects again by the next film.

I am super excited and have my seats reserved for Sat at an IMAX 3D HFR showing. I will also be seeing a regular non HFR 2D showing in a couple weeks with family and will be able to compare.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. mycroft16 on Twitter

AHA! That is why I can not ride Star Tours anymore..I get SOOO sick getting off that ride! Especially since it has changed to the 3D. I would get slighty sick before then but now...I'm close to passing out.
