  • Drew Struzan approached to do the posters for Episode VII

At least they are trying to keep some of the spirit of the original movies alive:

Drew Struzan Approached for Star Wars: Episode VII | Superhero Hype

I hope he agrees to do it.
"Greetings, Starfighter! You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the Frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada."

I'm excited that he is at least open to it. He did a limited edition print of Universal's Frankenstein last year (two years ago?) for Mondo and it was gorgeous.

Well, it's nice that he's been approached (he hasn't agreed to do it, though), and Struzan's definitely a great artist and a fan favorite, but choosing who is going to do the art for the poster, at this stage, is a bit odd. I'm more interested in who's signed on to direct the film, who'll produce it, who's doing the production design & so forth, and then of course who's being cast in the various parts, than who'll do the poster art. Doesn't really matter that the poster looks great, if the film itself sucks.

The poster art is part of marketing, which is usually one of the last aspects of a film project, and besides, it's not likely that Episode VII will have a problem being marketed.

This is just peculiar info coming at this time.

I would love to see Drew Struzan come out of retirement to illustrate the theatrical posters for the next 3 STAR WARS films; however his post online leaves me thinking the Walt Disney Co. is missing out on a golden opportunity (& that Drew Struzan is enjoying his rightfully earned retirement after illustrating over 150 film posters during a 35 year career) ...

If you are a fan of MONDO (out of Austin, Texas) then you knew Drew Struzan's limited edition THE WALKING DEAD posters were fantastic (& highly collectible). The only other Artist of his caliber, is John Alvin (who illustrated the theatrical posters for 1982's BLADE RUNNER), however John Alvin died back in 2006 .....

UPDATE: Struzan has posted the following update on his Facebook page about the situation:

A couple of friends at Disney were fantasizing about the new STAR WARS movies.
"Disney" has said nothing to me and I expect nothing. That a couple of friends were wishing is only an expression of the hope that many are sharing but says nothing regarding the Studio itself. Even if 'they' did ask, which Disney has not, I'd rather leave the new films to the next generation to interpret. I've had my time and they were exceptional blessings for which I will forever be grateful.
